Fire Station Furniture: Cushions for Dayrooms and Bunk Rooms

A practical guide for fire departments, facilities teams and builders specifying tough, easy-clean cushions for firehouse dayrooms, kitchens and bunk rooms.

Quick answer: Fire station furniture takes round-the-clock use, so specify cushions with firm high-density foam and a wipe-clean cover such as Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl or Ultraleather. Choose fabrics tested to the flammability standards your authority requires, and ask for the maker's test reports with the quote.

A firehouse is a workplace, a kitchen and a home all at once. The dayroom bench gets sat on in turnout pants, the kitchen banquette sees three meals a day, and the bunk room window seat becomes a quiet corner on a long shift. Cushions here need to be tough, easy to clean and simple to replace. This guide is for fire chiefs, station captains, facilities managers, architects and builders working on new stations or refits. Send your plans through our bulk cushion enquiry form for a quote.

Every cushion is made to measure, with no minimum order, so you can replace one worn seat or kit out a full new station.

Where firehouse cushions are used

  • Dayrooms: long built-in benches and recliner-side bench seating.
  • Kitchens: banquettes and breakfast-nook seating around the crew table. See our banquette cushions collection.
  • Bunk rooms and quiet rooms: window seats and daybed cushions for rest between calls.
  • Apparatus bay and gear areas: bench pads where crews sit to change.
  • Public rooms: lobby and community meeting room seating.

Durability first

Crews work long shifts, and seating is used all day and night. Specify for wear, not for showroom softness.

  • Foam: HD36-R is firm and durable for benches and banquettes. Lux-R is a premium high-resilience grade with a 7-year foam warranty, a good choice for seats that are used heavily every day.
  • Thickness: 3 to 4 inches is common for banquettes and benches. Daybed cushions can go thicker: our builder goes up to 8 inches, and double daybeds up to 12 inches.
  • Covers: zipped and removable, so a damaged cover can be swapped without replacing the foam.
  • Ties: matching fabric ties are standard, and Velcro is available on request for benches where cushions slide.

Our US foam is CertiPUR-US certified, from The Foam Factory, and made without added flame-retardant chemicals.

Fabrics that clean up fast

Firehouse seating meets soot, sweat, coffee and food. A wipe-clean surface is usually the first choice.

Fabric Cleaning Good fit

Ultraleather by Ultrafabrics Wipe with mild soap and water Officer lounges, community rooms

Fire testing and what we supply

Fire stations are public buildings, and your fire marshal, building department or department policy may set requirements for upholstered seating. Check those first and tell us what they are. We match the fabric to the requirement and attach the maker's test reports to your quote and spec sheet.

  • Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl: tested to Cal TB 117-2013, FMVSS 302 and UFAC Class I.
  • Ultraleather: tested to Cal TB 117, NFPA 260, UFAC, FMVSS 302 and ASTM E84 adhered Class A.
  • Sunbrella upholstery fabrics: tested to Cal TB 117-2013, NFPA 260 and UFAC Class I, confirmed per pattern.

We do not certify finished installations, and the local authority has the final say. Our fire safety and flammability standards page explains the tests in more detail.

Measuring a station

  1. Make a room list: dayroom, kitchen, bunk rooms, lobby, gear area.
  2. Measure each base: length and depth at the front and back. Built-in benches are often out of square.
  3. Note backs: loose back cushions, fixed wall panels, or none.
  4. Template odd shapes: corner banquettes and angled window seats need a paper template. Custom shapes take 5 to 6 weeks.
  5. Label everything: mark each piece on a floor plan so cushions arrive matched to their place.

Working with a department purchasing process

Fire departments often buy through committees, capital budgets or municipal purchasing rules. Plan for that from the start.

  • Get a written quote early: we quote from measurements and photos, so you can take a firm number to your budget meeting.
  • Attach the spec sheet: it lists sizes, foam grade, fabric and color for every piece, which makes approval simpler.
  • Include test reports: fabric test reports go with the quote, ready for whoever signs off on fire requirements.
  • Phase if needed: start with the dayroom and kitchen, then bunk rooms in the next budget year. Your spec stays on file, so later orders match.

If a station is part of a larger build, the architect or general contractor can manage the cushion order with us directly, which keeps sizes tied to the final drawings.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing soft, residential-feel foam for 24/7 seating.
  • Picking a woven fabric for the kitchen banquette where wipe-clean would be easier.
  • Leaving fire requirements until after the fabric is chosen.
  • Measuring one bench and assuming the rest match.
  • Not ordering spare covers for the busiest seats.

How a commercial order works

  1. Send your room list, measurements, photos and any requirements to operation@fabricakraft.com or through our fire station cushion enquiry form.
  2. Order swatches. They are $7 each, and the cost is credited back with a one-time code on your order.
  3. Approve the spec sheet and drawing, with fabric test reports attached. Nothing is cut until you sign off.
  4. Production takes 2 to 3 weeks for standard shapes and 5 to 6 weeks for custom shapes. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost.
  5. ACH or bank transfer can be arranged case by case for business orders.

Every cushion is made within ±0.5 inch of the ordered size, or we remake it free. Fabric carries a 5-year warranty from our fabric partners and workmanship carries 2 years. Architects and designers working on public safety buildings can join our trade program for tiered pricing and a dedicated contact. See all our commercial cushion services.
