Quick answer: For a school library or classroom reading nook, order window seat and bench cushions made to the exact size of the millwork, with firm foam and a cover that is easy to clean. Add floor cushions for flexible seating, and choose fabrics with the fire test reports your district or building authority asks for.

A good reading corner pulls students in. A built-in window seat, a bench under the shelves or a pile of floor cushions makes a library feel welcoming, but only if the cushions fit well and survive hundreds of small visitors a week. This guide is for librarians, teachers, school facilities managers, architects and millwork contractors building reading nooks. Send your drawings or sizes through our bulk cushion enquiry form for a quote.

Everything is made to measure, with no minimum order, so you can do one classroom nook or every library seat in a district.

Types of reading nook seating

  • Window seats: built-in seats under windows or in bay windows. See our window seat cushions collection.
  • Bench seats: long benches under shelving or along walls.
  • Floor cushions: square, round and rectangle cushions for story time and flexible seating. Browse our floor cushions collection.
  • Custom shapes: curved nooks, angled bays and wedges are made from a template.
  • Bolsters: long back cushions that turn a deep window seat into a comfortable reading spot.

For millwork contractors: plan cushions with the build

Cushions are easiest to get right when they are planned alongside the joinery, not after it.

  1. Share the shop drawing: we can quote from your drawings, then confirm sizes once the millwork is installed.
  2. Measure the finished box: length and depth at front and back. Walls and window bays are rarely square.
  3. Allow for thickness: decide cushion thickness before setting seat height. A 3 to 4 inch cushion is common on window seats.
  4. Template odd shapes: angled bays and curves need a paper template. Custom shapes take 5 to 6 weeks.
  5. Label positions: mark each cushion on the floor plan so installers know where each one goes.

Foam and comfort

  • HD36-R: firm and durable for seats that are climbed on and sat on all day.
  • Lux-R: a premium high-resilience grade with a 7-year foam warranty, for spaces you want to last longest.
  • Floor cushions: firm foam keeps their shape when children kneel or stack them.

Our builder goes up to 8 inches thick, and thicker cushions are quoted by email. Our US foam is CertiPUR-US certified, from The Foam Factory, and made without added flame-retardant chemicals.

Fabrics that stand up to students

Fabric Cleaning Good fit
Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl Wipe-clean Early years classrooms, lunch-and-read spaces
Sunbrella upholstery fabric Spot clean; zipped covers come off to wash Library window seats, quiet reading rooms
Ultraleather by Ultrafabrics Wipe with mild soap and water University libraries, staff lounges

Sunbrella is solution-dyed, so colors resist fading on sunny window seats. With over 5,000 colors across our ranges, you can match school colors or a calm library palette. Covers are zipped and removable. If zip access is a concern in rooms with young children, tell us and we will talk through options.

Fire safety in schools and libraries

Schools and public libraries often have requirements for upholstered seating from the fire marshal, district or building department. Check yours first and tell us what they are. Sunbrella upholstery fabrics are tested to Cal TB 117-2013, NFPA 260 and UFAC Class I, confirmed per pattern. Horizon marine vinyl is tested to Cal TB 117-2013, FMVSS 302 and UFAC Class I. We attach the maker's test reports to your quote, but we do not certify finished installations, and the local authority has the final say. Our fire safety and flammability standards page has more detail.

Care routine for busy rooms

  • Wipe vinyl cushions weekly, and after messy days.
  • Vacuum woven cushions, especially seams.
  • Unzip and wash covers over school breaks, following the fabric maker's guide.
  • Rotate floor cushions so wear spreads evenly.
  • Order a few spare covers for the most used seats.

Budgeting and approvals for schools

Library and classroom projects often go through a principal, a district facilities office and sometimes a parent group. A clear package makes approval easier.

  • Quote early: we quote from drawings or measurements, so you have a firm number for grant applications or budget requests.
  • Share the spec sheet: sizes, foam, fabric and color for every cushion in one document.
  • Include test reports: fabric test reports are attached for whoever reviews fire requirements.
  • Phase by room: start with the library, then add classroom nooks the next year. The spec stays on file, so later orders match.

For new buildings, the architect or millwork contractor can manage the cushion order as part of their scope, which keeps sizes tied to the final build.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering cushions from drawings and not checking the finished millwork.
  • Setting seat height without allowing for cushion thickness.
  • Choosing soft foam for a seat that will be climbed on.
  • Leaving fire documentation until after fabric is chosen.
  • Picking colors from a screen rather than a swatch in the room.

How a commercial order works

  1. Send drawings, measurements and photos to operation@fabricakraft.com or through our school cushion enquiry form.
  2. Order swatches. They are $7 each, and the cost is credited back with a one-time code on your order.
  3. Approve the spec sheet and drawing, with fabric test reports attached. Nothing is cut until you sign off.
  4. Production takes 2 to 3 weeks for standard shapes and 5 to 6 weeks for custom shapes. Plan around school breaks, and ask about rush production at extra cost.
  5. ACH or bank transfer can be arranged case by case for school and district orders.

Every cushion is made within ±0.5 inch of the ordered size, or we remake it free. Fabric carries a 5-year warranty and workmanship carries 2 years. See our school and university cushions page for dorms and common rooms, and our commercial cushion services. Architects, designers and contractors can join our trade program.
