Best Replacement Couch Cushions: Foam, Fill and Fit Explained
What makes a replacement couch cushion good: the right seat foam, soft backs, a 1″ Dacron wrap and an exact fit. A practical buying guide.
On this page
Quick answer: The best replacement couch cushions are made to your sofa's exact measurements, use a seat foam that matches how you sit, and have zippered covers you can take off to clean. For most seats, High Density foam with a 1″ Dacron wrap gives a medium feel with a soft, rounded edge. Back cushions are usually best soft: Super Soft foam or fiber fill, never seat foam.
A good sofa frame outlasts its cushions by years. When the seats go flat, "best" is not a brand or a price point. It is three choices: the foam inside, how the backs are filled, and how well the cushion fits the frame. Get those right and a tired couch sits like new.
What makes a replacement couch cushion good?
| What to check | What good looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Made to your measured size, not the nearest stock size | Cushions that are too small slide and leave gaps; too big and they bulge and wear at the seams |
| Seat foam | A named foam type chosen for seats | The foam decides the feel and how long the seat stays level |
| Wrap | Optional 1″ Dacron (polyester fiber) wrap on the foam | Softens the edge and fills the cover so it looks plump |
| Back fill | Super Soft foam or fiber fill | Backs should let you sink in, not push you forward |
| Cover | Zippered, in a fabric suited to the room | A zip lets you remove the cover for cleaning or replace only the cover later |
| Tolerance | A stated cutting tolerance | Tells you how close to your measurements the cushion will be |
Best foam for couch cushions
The seat and the back do different jobs, so they need different fills.
- High Density foam (seats): the everyday choice. It has a medium feel and is firm enough to keep its shape under daily use.
- Lux foam (seats): firmer than High Density, for people who like to sit up rather than sink in.
- Super Soft foam (backs only): for back cushions you want to lean into. It is too soft to support a seat.
- Fiber fill (backs): the slouchy, pillow-like look many sofas have on their loose back cushions.
- Dry Fast foam: an open-cell foam that lets water drain through. It is made for outdoor sofas, not living rooms.
Our foam is CertiPUR-US certified. Not sure which seat foam to choose? Order one cushion first and try it before ordering the full set.
Why your back cushions feel too firm
One of the most common questions we get is about back cushions that "push you forward." That usually means seat-grade foam was used in the back. Swap it for Super Soft foam, or for fiber fill if you want a relaxed, slouchy back. See couch back cushions.
How thick should couch cushions be?
Most sofa seat cushions are 4″ to 6″ thick. A 1″ Dacron wrap adds fullness on top of the foam size. Match the thickness of your old cushions unless the seat has always felt too low or too high. We cut up to 8″; anything thicker is quoted by email.
| Cushion | Typical size (W × D) | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa seat (3-seat) | 22″–26″ × 21″–25″ | 4″–6″ |
| Loveseat seat | 24″–30″ × 21″–24″ | 4″–6″ |
| Back cushion | 22″–26″ wide × 18″–22″ tall | 4″–6″ |
| Sectional corner | 30″–34″ × 30″–34″ | 4″–6″ |
Typical sizes only. Always measure your own cushions; see how to measure couch cushions.
Foam only, cover only, or the whole cushion?
- Seats flat, covers fine: order replacement foam cut to size.
- Covers worn, foam still firm: order covers only.
- Both tired, or cushions missing: order complete replacement couch cushions.
Keeping your existing foam? Measure the foam out of its cover for width, depth and thickness, so the new cover is made to the foam.
Which fabric is best for couch cushions?
- Warwick upholstery: made for indoor furniture, with a wide range of textures.
- Velvet: a soft, rich look for living rooms.
- Faux leather: wipes clean and does not hold pet hair.
- Sunbrella: solution-dyed, so it resists fading in sunny rooms and cleans well, which suits homes with kids and pets.
Choose color in daylight: order swatches first. The swatch cost is credited back on your cushion order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best foam for couch cushions?
For seats, High Density foam with a 1″ Dacron wrap suits most people: a medium feel that holds its shape. Choose Lux foam if you prefer a firmer seat. For back cushions, use Super Soft foam or fiber fill.
Can I use the same foam for seat and back cushions?
It is better not to. Seat foam in the back makes the backs feel stiff. Super Soft foam is made for backs only and is too soft for seats.
How do I know what thickness to order?
Measure your current cushions. Most sofa seats are 4″ to 6″. If the seat always felt too low, go up an inch; if your feet don't reach the floor comfortably, go down.
Can I order one cushion first to test the feel?
Yes. There is no minimum order, so you can order one cushion, try it, then order the rest.
Is the white layer around the foam packing material?
No. That is the Dacron wrap, part of the cushion. Leave it on the foam inside the cover.
