How to Measure Couch Cushions for Replacement
A step-by-step guide to measuring sofa seat and back cushions, including T-cushions and odd shapes, so your replacements fit the frame the first time.

Couch cushions take a lot of daily wear. Over time they flatten, lose their shape, or simply stop looking the way they did when the sofa was new. Replacing them is one of the easiest ways to bring a couch back to life, and the most important part of the job is getting the measurements right.
This guide walks you through how to measure seat and back cushions so your new ones fit the frame snugly, look tailored, and feel comfortable from day one.
What You Will Need
Gather a few simple tools before you start:
- A rigid metal tape measure (a soft sewing tape helps on curves)
- A notepad or your phone to record numbers
- A large sheet of paper or cardboard if your cushions have an unusual shape
Measure in inches and round to the nearest quarter inch. Write down every number as you go, and label each cushion so you don't mix them up later.
Measure the Cushion or the Frame?
If your existing cushions still hold their shape, measuring them is usually the fastest route. If they have shrunk, slumped, or gone missing, measure the space on the couch frame instead. Frame measurements tell you the true size of the opening the cushion needs to fill.
When in doubt, measure both. If the cushion and the frame disagree by more than half an inch, trust the frame.
How to Measure a Seat Cushion
- Width. Measure from the left side to the right side across the front edge of the cushion, seam to seam.
- Depth. Measure from the front edge to the back edge, through the middle of the cushion.
- Thickness. Measure the height of the side panel, not the puffy center. Rest a book lightly on top to get a true reading.
- Back width. Measure across the back edge too. Many sofa cushions are wider at the front than the back, especially on end seats.
- Shape notes. Note any T-shape, rounded corners, or angled sides. For a T-cushion, measure the full front width, the width at the back, and the depth of each "ear" that wraps in front of the arm.
How to Measure a Back Cushion
- Width. Measure side to side across the widest point.
- Height. Measure from the bottom edge, where it sits on the seat cushion, up to the top edge.
- Thickness. Measure the side panel at the bottom and at the top. Back cushions are often thinner at the top, which helps them lean naturally against the frame.
Tips for Measuring an Odd Shape
Curved sofas, corner seats, and cushions that wrap around arms can be tricky. The easiest fix is a paper template. Lay a sheet of paper or flattened cardboard on the seat deck, press it into the corners, and trace the outline. Then measure the template and note where each curve starts and ends. A photo of the template next to a tape measure makes a handy reference.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring the crown. The center of an old cushion often bulges. Always measure thickness at the seam.
- Assuming every cushion is the same. End cushions often differ from middle ones. Measure each one separately.
- Including the piping. Measure seam to seam, not from the outer edge of any welt or piping, so you don't add extra width.
- Rushing. Measure twice. It takes a minute and saves a lot of hassle.
Choosing Thickness and Fill
Most sofa seat cushions fall somewhere between 4 and 6 inches thick. Our sofa and deep seat cushions can be made from 3 to 6 inches thick, so you can match your current cushions or go a little fuller.
For indoor sofas, our High Density, Luxury, and Super Soft foam options let you choose anything from a firm, supportive seat to a softer, sink-in feel. If the couch lives on a porch or patio, Dry Fast foam drains water and is the better fit for outdoor use. You can compare every option in our custom foam collection.
Picking a Fabric
Indoors, you can choose from Warwick fabrics, velvet, and faux leather. For a busy family room or any outdoor seating, Sunbrella is a smart pick. It is a solution-dyed acrylic that holds its color in the sun and resists mildew. Every cover has a zipper, so it comes off when you need it to.
