A practical guide for studio owners, retreat managers and retailers ordering yoga bolsters, zabutons and meditation floor cushions in bulk.

Quick answer: For a studio or retreat, order yoga bolsters and zabuton floor cushions with a firm foam core and zipped removable covers, all in one fabric batch so colors match. Made-to-measure sizing lets you fit your storage shelves and your class style, and there is no minimum order.

Props take a beating in a busy studio. Bolsters are leaned on, sat on and carried across the room many times a day. Zabutons are knelt on for long sits. When covers fade or fill goes flat, the room looks tired and students notice. This guide is for studio owners, retreat centers, teacher training programs and shops that sell props. To get a quote for a full set, use our bulk cushion enquiry form.

We make bolsters, floor cushions in square, round and rectangle shapes, and custom shapes from a drawing. Everything is made to measure, so you choose the size, thickness, fabric and color.

What to stock: bolsters, zabutons and floor cushions

  • Bolsters: long cylindrical or rectangular cushions for restorative poses and support. See our bolster and pillow collection for shapes.
  • Zabutons: flat, square or rectangular floor mats that cushion knees and ankles under a meditation seat.
  • Floor cushions: square or round seats for meditation, talks and lounge areas. Browse our floor cushions collection.
  • Custom shapes: wedges and other odd shapes are quoted after you send a drawing or template.

Sizing for your classes and your shelves

Because nothing comes off a fixed size chart, you can plan around how you teach and where props live between classes.

  1. Decide per-student counts: how many bolsters and zabutons does each student need in your busiest class?
  2. Measure storage: shelf depth and height, or cubby size. Size props so they slide in neatly.
  3. Choose a standard: pick one bolster size and one zabuton size for the main room. Mixed sizes slow down setup and pack-away.
  4. Add a few specials: a smaller bolster for children's classes, or a larger zabuton for teachers.

Fill and firmness

A prop has to hold its shape under a body for a long time. We build our bolsters and floor cushions around a firm foam core, which keeps its height class after class and does not shift or clump.

  • Bolsters: a firm core keeps them from flattening in supported poses.
  • Zabutons: 2 to 3 inches of firm foam usually gives enough cushion for knees without feeling unstable.
  • Floor cushions: thicker seats suit longer sits. Our builder goes up to 8 inches, and thicker is quoted by email.

Our US foam is CertiPUR-US certified, from The Foam Factory, and made without added flame-retardant chemicals.

Fabrics for a busy studio

Fabric Feel Care Good fit
Sunbrella upholstery fabric Soft woven texture Zipped covers come off for washing Main studio props, heavy daily use
Velvet Plush, warm Spot clean, follow the maker's guidance Meditation rooms, retreat lounges, retail
Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl Smooth Wipe-clean Hot rooms, outdoor decks, shared props

Sunbrella fabrics are solution-dyed, so colors resist fading in sunny rooms. Most Sunbrella is water-repellent rather than waterproof, which helps with spills and sweat while still feeling like fabric. There are over 5,000 colors across our ranges, so you can match your studio palette closely.

Cleaning and hygiene routine

  • Ask students to use a towel or mat cloth on shared bolsters.
  • Wipe vinyl props after each class with mild soap and water.
  • Unzip woven covers and wash them on a regular schedule, following the fabric maker's care guide.
  • Keep a set of spare covers so props stay in use while others are washed.
  • Let props air out before stacking, especially after hot classes.

Retreats and outdoor decks

Retreat centers often run sessions on decks, lawns and covered pavilions. For outdoor use, choose Sunbrella fabric with Dryfast open-cell foam, which drains quickly and carries a 5-year foam warranty. Store props indoors overnight and in wet weather to make them last longer.

Selling props under your own brand

Studios and shops that sell bolsters and zabutons to students can order at wholesale volumes. Our wholesale page for bulk buyers covers reseller orders, and our white label and private label program explains how unbranded products work for your own label.

Budgeting and phasing a studio fit-out

Price depends on size, thickness, foam grade, fabric and quantity, so the quickest way to budget is to quote one standard set first: one bolster, one zabuton and one floor cushion in your chosen fabric. Multiply that by your student count, then decide what to phase.

  • Phase one: props for your busiest room and your teacher training cohort.
  • Phase two: secondary rooms and retreat spaces.
  • Phase three: spare covers and retail stock.

Because sizes and fabrics are kept on your spec sheet, later phases match the first. Order each color in one batch where you can, so shades match exactly. If you plan to grow, choose a core color you can reorder for years, and use accent colors for smaller rooms.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering mixed sizes that do not fit your shelves.
  • Choosing a soft fill that flattens after a few weeks of classes.
  • Skipping spare covers, so props go out of use on wash day.
  • Picking color from a screen instead of a swatch in your own light.
  • Leaving outdoor props out in the rain overnight.

Ordering for a business

  1. Send your sizes, quantities and any drawings to operation@fabricakraft.com or through our bulk enquiry form for studios.
  2. Order swatches. They are $7 each, and the cost is credited back with a one-time code on your order.
  3. Approve the spec sheet and drawing before anything is cut.
  4. Production takes 2 to 3 weeks for standard shapes and 5 to 6 weeks for custom shapes. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost.

Every piece is made within ±0.5 inch of the ordered size, or we remake it free. Fabric carries a 5-year warranty from our fabric partners and workmanship carries 2 years. Studios that reorder through the year can join our trade program for tiered pricing. See our commercial cushion services for lounges and reception seating too.
