Outdoor Sofa Cushion Sizes: Deep Seat vs Standard
Understand the difference between deep seat and standard outdoor sofa cushions, and learn how to measure your patio furniture for the right fit.
On this page
Outdoor sofas come in two broad styles: standard and deep seat. They look similar in photos, but they feel very different once you sit down. Knowing which style you have, and measuring it properly, is the first step toward cushions that fit well and stay comfortable all season.
What Is a Standard Outdoor Sofa?
A standard outdoor sofa has a shallower seat, similar to many dining-height or upright patio chairs. You sit with your back against the backrest and your feet flat on the ground. Standard seats suit conversation areas, smaller patios, and anyone who prefers a more upright posture.
Seat cushions for standard frames are typically on the thinner side, with separate back cushions or a fixed frame back.
What Is a Deep Seat Outdoor Sofa?
A deep seat sofa has a seat that extends noticeably further from front to back. It is built for lounging. You can lean back into large back cushions, tuck your legs up, or stretch out. Deep seat frames are popular for outdoor living rooms, covered patios, and poolside lounging.
Deep seat cushions are usually thicker and come as a set: a seat cushion and a back cushion for each seat.
How to Tell Which One You Have
The simplest way is to measure the seat depth. As a general guide, many standard frames have a seat depth in the low 20s of inches, while deep seat frames often run noticeably deeper. Rather than rely on a label, measure your frame and use the real numbers. That is what your new cushions need to match.
How to Measure an Outdoor Sofa
- Remove the old cushions. Measure the bare frame for the most accurate result.
- Measure the seat width. Measure from the inside of one arm to the inside of the other. For a multi-seat sofa, decide whether you want one long cushion or separate cushions, and divide the width evenly for separate ones.
- Measure the seat depth. Measure from the front edge of the frame to the back rail or back cushion support.
- Measure the back height. If you need back cushions, measure from the seat deck up to the height where you want the back cushion to stop, usually at or just above the frame top.
- Note the shape. Check for rounded front corners, notches for frame posts, or angled sides on sectional pieces.
- Check the old cushions. If they fit well, measure their thickness at the side seam as a reference.
Measure in inches and round to the nearest quarter inch.
Choosing a Thickness
- Standard frames often look and feel best with a thinner seat cushion, which keeps the seat height comfortable.
- Deep seat frames usually take seat cushions around 5–6 inches thick, which gives the plush, lounge-ready feel these sofas are known for.
Keep seat height in mind. A thicker cushion raises where you sit, so if your frame is already tall, a slightly thinner cushion keeps your feet on the ground.
Foam for Outdoor Use
Outdoor cushions face rain, dew, and spills. Dry Fast foam drains water and is the foam we suggest for outdoor use. It is a smart choice for any sofa that sits in the open or on an uncovered deck.
If your sofa sits in a fully covered space and stays dry, you can also consider High Density or Luxury foam for the seat. Super Soft foam is for back cushions only.
Fabric for Outdoor Use
Sunbrella is our go-to for outdoor sofas. It is a solution-dyed acrylic that holds its color in the sun and resists mildew, two things that matter a lot outdoors. Every cover is zippered, so it comes off the foam when you need it to.
Standard or Deep Seat: Which Should You Pick?
Usually the frame decides for you, since your cushions need to match it. If you are choosing new furniture, think about how you use the space. For dining, chatting, and quick sits, a standard frame is practical. For long afternoons, reading, and relaxing, deep seat is hard to beat.
