Quick summary
For everyday family furniture, the most durable upholstery fabrics are performance fabrics (solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella, or performance polyester), performance faux leather such as Ultraleather, and tightly woven synthetic velvets. Check three things before you buy: the rub count (aim for 15,000+ double rubs for home seating, 30,000+ for heavy use), how the fabric is cleaned, and whether it fades in sun. Linen, silk and loose weaves look beautiful but wear fastest.
Upholstery fabrics compared
| Fabric | Durability | Cleaning | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella) | Very high | Soap and water; diluted bleach | Family sofas, dining chairs, sunny rooms, outdoors | Costs more than basic polyester |
| Performance polyester | High | Soap and water | Busy living rooms, pets | Printed colors can fade in strong sun |
| Olefin (polypropylene) | High | Easy | Budget outdoor and basement furniture | Firmer feel, fewer colors |
| Ultraleather (performance faux leather) | Very high | Wipe clean | Dining chairs, banquettes, boats, kids | Made to order; longer lead time |
| Genuine leather | High, ages with use | Wipe and condition | Statement sofas and chairs | Scratches, needs conditioning, sun can dry it |
| Vinyl | Medium to high | Wipe clean | Diners, marine, high-spill areas | Can feel stiff and crack in sun and cold |
| Velvet (polyester or blend) | Medium to high | Vacuum, spot clean or professional | Living rooms, headboards, accent chairs | Shows pressure marks and pet hair |
| Chenille | Medium | Vacuum, spot clean | Cozy sofas in low-traffic rooms | Loops can snag on claws |
| Cotton and cotton blends | Medium | Depends on finish | Casual slipcovers | Stains and fades without a performance finish |
| Linen | Low to medium | Spot clean or professional | Formal rooms, light use | Wrinkles and wears at edges |
How to judge durability
Rub count
Abrasion is measured in “double rubs” (the Wyzenbeek test) or “cycles” (the Martindale test). As a rule of thumb, 15,000 double rubs suits everyday home seating and 30,000 or more suits heavy family or commercial use. Very high numbers add little once you are past that point; weave and fiber matter too.
Weave
Tight, flat weaves resist snagging and pilling. Loose, nubby or looped weaves (some bouclés and chenilles) feel lovely but catch on rings, toys and claws.
Color method
Solution-dyed fibers carry color all the way through, so they resist fading and can take stronger cleaners. Printed or piece-dyed fabrics carry color on the surface and fade sooner in sunny rooms.
Cleanability
Look for the cleaning code on the label: W (water-based cleaner), S (solvent only), W/S (either) or X (vacuum only). For homes with kids and pets, W or W/S fabrics are far easier to live with.
Best fabric by piece of furniture
- Family sofa: performance acrylic or performance polyester in a mid-tone color that hides wear.
- Dining chairs: wipe-clean Ultraleather or Sunbrella; food spills are the main risk. See how to reupholster dining chair seats.
- Window seats and benches: Sunbrella or Warwick, which handle sun from the window.
- Accent chairs and headboards: velvet, where wear is light and texture matters most.
- Outdoor and poolside: Sunbrella upholstery, Sunbrella Rain or Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl. Read waterproof vs water-repellent fabrics.
- Restaurants and hotels: fabrics that meet the fire codes your project needs. See the best fabrics for restaurant booths and banquettes.
What about cushion material inside?
The fabric is only half the cushion. For seats, choose high-density foam (around 1.8 lb density); for thin dining seats, a firmer foam so they don't bottom out; for outdoor cushions that get rained on, open-cell Dryfast foam that drains. Soft foam is for back cushions only. All our foam is CertiPUR-US certified; our cushion size and foam guide explains each type.
Healthier fabric choices
If chemicals are a concern, look for fabrics certified to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX and fabrics made without added PFAS. Most Sunbrella upholstery fabrics carry both. The certificate belongs to the mill, so ask the seller for it. Read what the OEKO-TEX label really means.
FAQ
What is the most durable sofa fabric for everyday use?
Solution-dyed acrylic performance fabric such as Sunbrella, performance polyester and performance faux leather such as Ultraleather. All three clean easily and resist wear; acrylic and faux leather also resist fading.
Is velvet a good upholstery fabric?
Yes, if it is a tightly woven polyester or blended velvet. It wears well but shows pressure marks and pet hair. Vacuum it weekly with a soft brush and brush the pile in one direction after cleaning.
What fabric is best for dining chairs?
A wipe-clean fabric: Ultraleather, vinyl or a performance fabric like Sunbrella. Avoid linen and loose weaves on chairs used every day.
What is the best fabric for outdoor cushions?
Solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella, which resists fading, mold and mildew. For cushions left in the rain, choose Sunbrella Rain or marine vinyl and pair it with Dryfast foam.
Can I use my own upholstery fabric?
Yes. Email care@fabricakraft.com with your cushion sizes and the fabric width, and we'll confirm the yardage before you send it.
