New Covers or New Cushions? When to Replace Just the Cover

Learn when a fresh cover is all your cushions need, when it's time for full replacements, and how to measure for a cover that fits.

Faded fabric, a stubborn stain, or a color that no longer suits your space can make cushions look tired even when they still feel fine. In many cases, you don't need brand-new cushions at all. A fresh cover can give your furniture a whole new look while you keep the foam you already have.

Here is how to tell when a cover is enough and when it is time to replace the whole cushion.

When a New Cover Is All You Need

Replacing just the cover makes sense when the foam inside is still in good shape. Signs that a cover swap is the right call:

  • The fabric is faded, stained, pilled, or torn, but the cushion still feels supportive
  • The cushion springs back when you press it and keeps its shape when you sit
  • You want a new color or pattern to match a new look
  • The zipper has failed but everything else is fine
  • You are moving indoor furniture to a sunny spot and want a fabric better suited to the light

When to Replace the Whole Cushion

Sometimes the problem goes deeper than the fabric. Consider complete replacement cushions if:

  • The foam stays dented, feels thin, or lets you feel the frame underneath
  • The cushion has lost its shape, with flat middles or crumbling edges
  • Outdoor cushions stay soggy after rain or smell musty
  • You want a different thickness or shape than you have now

If the foam is worn, a new cover will look good for a short time, but the cushion will still feel flat. In that case, starting fresh usually gives the best result.

How to Check Your Foam

  1. Unzip the cover. Take the insert out and look at it in good light.
  2. Press and release. Push down firmly in the center. Healthy foam returns quickly.
  3. Look at the edges. Crumbling, cracking, or flaking edges are a sign the foam is breaking down.
  4. Check for moisture. On outdoor cushions, look for dampness, discoloration, or a musty smell.
  5. Sit test. Put the insert back on the frame without the cover and sit. If it feels supportive, it is a good candidate for a new cover.

How to Measure for a New Cover

To get a snug, tailored fit, measure the foam insert, not the old cover. Old covers can stretch, shrink, or lose their shape over time.

  1. Width. Measure the insert side to side, edge to edge.
  2. Depth. Measure front to back.
  3. Thickness. Measure the height of the side, not the center.
  4. Shape. Note any rounded corners, T-shapes, or angled sides, and sketch them.

Measure in inches and round to the nearest quarter inch. If your insert is slightly compressed, measure it gently without squeezing.

Choosing a Cover Fabric

A new cover is a chance to pick a fabric that suits how the cushion is used.

  • Sunbrella is a solution-dyed acrylic that holds its color in the sun and resists mildew. It is a strong choice for outdoor cushions and for indoor seats near bright windows.
  • Warwick fabrics offer a wide range of colors and textures for indoor use.
  • Velvet adds softness and depth to indoor sofas and chairs.
  • Faux leather gives a clean, tailored look for indoor seating.

Every cover is zippered, which makes it simple to fit over your existing foam.

A Middle Option: New Foam, Same Cover

It is worth mentioning the reverse situation too. If your covers still look great but the cushions feel flat, you can keep the covers and replace just the foam. Our foam grades include High Density (medium) and Luxury (firm) for seats, Super Soft for back cushions only, and Dry Fast, which drains water and suits outdoor use.

Making the Call

  • Fabric worn, foam fine: order new covers.
  • Foam worn, fabric fine: order new foam.
  • Both worn, or you want a new size: order complete cushions.

If you are unsure, think about the cushion's next few years. If it gets daily use and the foam is already starting to soften, replacing everything at once can save you a second project later.
