Quick answer: Yes, Sunbrella works well indoors on sofas, window seats, banquettes and pillows. Its solution-dyed acrylic holds its color in sunny rooms, its stain resistance is built into the yarn, and it cleans with mild soap and water, or diluted bleach for tough stains. Most Sunbrella is water-repellent rather than waterproof. The feel ranges from crisp canvas to the softer Sunbrella Interiors range, so order a swatch first.
Sunbrella is famous for patio cushions that survive a whole summer of sun, rain and spilled lemonade. So it's natural to wonder: if it can handle the backyard, why not the family room? People ask us this every week, usually because of a new puppy, a white sofa, a sunny window seat or a toddler with a juice cup. Here is a clear answer, with what Sunbrella itself says and the few things to watch for.
The short answer
Yes, you can use Sunbrella indoors, and many people do. It resists stains and fading, it cleans with mild soap and water, and its tougher stains can even be treated with diluted bleach. Many Sunbrella upholstery fabrics are made for both indoor and outdoor use, and in 2025 Sunbrella launched Sunbrella Interiors, a range designed specifically for indoor furniture with softer yarns. The main thing to check is the feel: some outdoor textures are crisper than typical indoor upholstery, so order a swatch before you commit.
Why Sunbrella works inside the house
The color goes all the way through
Sunbrella is made from solution-dyed acrylic. The color is added to the fiber before it is spun into yarn, instead of being printed or dyed onto the surface. Sunbrella calls this "Color to the Core" and says color and UV protection are built directly into the fiber, not applied as a surface finish. That is why it holds its color in sunrooms and in front of big windows, where ordinary upholstery can fade in a season or two.
Stain resistance that doesn't wear off
Sunbrella's stain resistance is part of the yarn, so according to Sunbrella it doesn't wash away or wear off. Many "stain-resistant" sofa fabrics rely on a spray-on finish that fades with cleaning.
Made with kids and pets in mind
Sunbrella describes its indoor fabrics as crafted for family-friendly spaces, stain-resistant and bleach-cleanable, with no intentionally added PFAS. Most of its products are tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and certified GREENGUARD Gold for low chemical emissions. Note that "most" is the honest word: check the specific fabric if a certification matters to you.
Tough enough for daily sitting
Upholstery fabrics are tested for abrasion by counting "double rubs" before wear shows. Sunbrella publishes these per fabric. Canvas is rated around 45,000 double rubs, Pique 50,000, Carlo 65,000 and some newer indoor textures over 85,000. For context, the Association for Contract Textiles uses 15,000 double rubs as its benchmark for general commercial seating, which is far tougher use than a home sofa sees. Sunbrella itself notes that abrasion tests don't predict exactly how long a fabric will last, so treat the numbers as a comparison, not a promise.
What is Sunbrella Interiors?
Sunbrella announced Sunbrella Interiors in September 2025, with the tagline "Performance Never Felt So Soft." It brings Sunbrella performance to fabrics that look and feel like indoor upholstery: chenilles, bouclés, softer weaves, window treatments and throws. The extra softness comes from novelty yarns developed at Sunbrella's North Carolina plant. Sunbrella Interiors fabrics carry a 5-year limited warranty covering abrasion, pilling and color loss under normal use. Read more on our Sunbrella Interiors page.
The honest drawbacks
- Feel varies by fabric. Classic outdoor canvases feel crisper than a typical sofa fabric. The softer textures and the Interiors range close that gap. The fix is simple: touch a swatch first.
- Claws still win. Stain-resistant isn't scratch-proof. Sunbrella's own pet guidance talks about stains and cleaning, not claws, so tightly woven fabrics are the better pick for cats.
- It isn't waterproof. Most Sunbrella fabric is water-repellent. A spill beads up long enough to blot, but it will soak in if left.

How to clean Sunbrella indoors
These steps follow Sunbrella's upholstery cleaning guide:
- Act fast. Blot spills with a clean, dry cloth. Don't rub.
- Everyday cleaning: mix ¼ cup of mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water. Mist the area and clean from seam to seam with a soft sponge or brush so you don't leave a ring.
- Oily spills: sprinkle cornstarch, leave it for 10 minutes, then lift it away with a straight edge before cleaning.
- Tough stains or mildew: mix 1 cup of bleach and ¼ cup of mild soap per gallon of water, let it soak for 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Protect any nearby non-Sunbrella fabric from the bleach.
- Rinse and air dry. Blot or wet-vacuum until no soap remains. Never use a steamer, and only iron on the synthetic setting.
- Removable covers: wash cold on a delicate cycle and air dry. Every Fabrica Kraft cushion cover has a zipper.

FAQ
Does Sunbrella feel scratchy indoors?
It depends on the fabric. Canvas styles feel crisper. Softer weaves and the Sunbrella Interiors range feel like regular indoor upholstery.
Is Sunbrella safe for babies and pets?
Sunbrella says its fabrics have no intentionally added PFAS, and most are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tested and GREENGUARD Gold certified. Check the specific fabric if you need a certificate.
Can I bleach Sunbrella indoor cushions?
Yes, diluted, as described above. Rinse well and keep bleach away from other fabrics nearby.
Will Sunbrella fade near a window?
It is built to resist fading because the color runs through the fiber. That makes it one of the best choices for sunny window seats and sunrooms.
