Quick answer: Brush off loose mould outside, then scrub with a mild soap and lukewarm water and rinse thoroughly. For stubborn mould on bleach-cleanable fabrics such as Sunbrella, use the diluted bleach solution in the fabric maker's care guide, test a hidden spot first, rinse well and dry the cushion fully in the sun. Prevent it coming back by drying cushions after rain, storing them dry and using quick-dry foam.

Humid summers along the east coast, afternoon storms and cushions left out overnight are a perfect recipe for mould. The black spots you see usually grow on dirt, sunscreen and pollen sitting on the surface, so even mould-resistant fabrics need a clean now and then. Here is how to deal with it.

What you need

  • A soft brush
  • Mild soap, such as a gentle dishwashing liquid
  • A bucket of lukewarm water
  • A hose or clean water for rinsing
  • Gloves

Step by step

  1. Work outside. Brush off loose mould away from the house so spores don't spread.
  2. Check the care label. Every fabric has its own cleaning rules. Don't use bleach unless the fabric maker says it is safe.
  3. Scrub gently. Use the soft brush and soapy water, working in small circles. Let it soak in for a few minutes.
  4. Treat stubborn spots. For bleach-cleanable fabrics such as Sunbrella, use the diluted bleach and soap solution in Sunbrella’s care guide. Always test a hidden area first.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Any soap left behind attracts dirt and new mould.
  6. Dry completely. Stand cushions on their edge in the sun and turn them so every side dries. Don't put a cover back on damp foam.

If the mould is inside the foam

If the smell or spots keep coming back after cleaning the cover, the mould is likely in the foam. At that point it is usually better to replace the foam than keep cleaning. You can order replacement foam or a new cover on its own.

How to stop it coming back

  • Stand cushions on their edge after rain so water drains out.
  • Store them somewhere dry and ventilated during long wet spells, not sealed in plastic.
  • Choose quick-dry foam for uncovered seating.
  • Brush off leaves, pollen and dirt regularly, and wipe off sunscreen and spills quickly.
  • Use solution-dyed fabric such as Sunbrella outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get mould out of outdoor cushions?

Usually, yes. Surface mould comes off with mild soap, water and a soft brush. If it keeps coming back, the foam inside may need replacing.

Can I use bleach on outdoor cushions?

Only if the fabric maker's care guide says it is safe. Sunbrella fabric can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution; many other fabrics cannot. Always test a hidden spot first.

Does Sunbrella fabric get mouldy?

The fabric resists mould, but mould can grow on dirt and moisture sitting on it. Regular cleaning and drying stops it.

Can I put outdoor cushions in the washing machine?

Some removable covers can be machine washed; check the care label. Foam should never go in the washing machine.

How do I stop cushions going mouldy?

Dry them after rain, store them dry and ventilated, clean them regularly and use quick-dry foam outdoors.
