Morris Chair Cushions

The Morris chair is one of the earliest reclining chair designs: a wood frame with wide flat arms, often slatted sides, and a back that tilts on a rod or peg. Its comfort comes almost entirely from two loose cushions. When those go flat, the chair stops being the best seat in the room. We make new ones to the size of your frame.

Footstool and ottoman tops in the same fabric
Covers only for cushions with good foam
Foam

Why does a Morris chair seat need firm foam?

Many Morris chairs have a seat of wood slats, a spring deck or webbing under the cushion rather than a padded base. A soft cushion sinks through to that surface. A 4–5″ Lux-R core holds its shape and spreads your weight, and a Dacron wrap rounds the edges so the cushion looks full. If your chair has a sprung deck, HD36-R may feel better.

Measuring

How do I measure a Morris chair?

Seat width: inside the arms, at the front and at the back. They often differ slightly.
Seat depth: from the front rail to the back panel with the back upright.
Back: height from the seat to the top of the back panel, and width between the uprights.
Notches: if posts cut into the seat corners, measure each notch, or trace the old cushion on paper.

See the measuring guide for photos. For notched cushions, email care@fabricakraft.com with your template.

Fabric

What fabric suits a Mission-style chair?

Oak and cherry frames pair well with warm solids, tweeds and velvets. If the chair sees daily use or pets, Sunbrella and Warwick performance fabrics clean up easily. For a leather look, Ultraleather and faux leather are options; Ultraleather is made to order and takes 8–12 weeks. Order swatches to see colors against the wood.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell Morris chair cushions in standard sizes?

No. Morris chairs vary a lot from maker to maker, so we cut every cushion to the measurements you send.

How does the back cushion stay in place when the chair reclines?

Ties in matching fabric hold the back cushion to the frame, and Velcro is available on request. Note where the old ties sat and we will put the new ones in the same places.

How thick should a Morris chair seat cushion be?

Most are 4–5″. Measure your old cushion and the height of the arms so the new one sits at a comfortable level.

Can you cut around the back posts?

Yes. Send a paper template of the old cushion and we will cut the notches to match. Template orders take 5–6 weeks.

Is the leather option real leather?

No. We offer Ultraleather and faux leather, not genuine leather.
