Sunbrella Chaise Lounge Cushions: Sizing, Foam and Fabric Guide

How to measure a chaise lounge, choose between one-piece, hinged and 2-break cushions, pick the right foam for a pool deck, and choose Sunbrella fabric that lasts.

Quick answer: Measure your chaise's width and total length (for a hinged chaise, add the seat length and the back length), choose hinged if the back reclines, and pick Dry Fast foam for a pool deck or any chaise left out in the rain. Sunbrella fabric is solution-dyed, so it resists fading from sun and pool water far better than printed fabrics.

A chaise lounge is the seat people fight over on a sunny day, and the cushion decides whether it is a place to nap for an hour or a place to perch for ten minutes. Here is how to get the size, style, foam and fabric right before you order Sunbrella chaise lounge cushions.

How do I measure a chaise lounge for a cushion?

  1. Width: measure across the seat from side to side, inside the arms if it has them.
  2. Length: for a flat chaise, measure from the foot to the head. For a hinged chaise, measure the seat length and the back length separately, then add them together. Note where the hinge falls.
  3. Thickness: most chaise cushions are 3″ to 5″. Thicker cushions feel more like a daybed.

Replacing an old cushion? Measure the foam edge to edge, not the old cover, which stretches over time.

One-piece, hinged or 2-break?

  • One-piece: for flat chaises and daybed-style loungers that don't recline.
  • Hinged (single break): for a chaise with a reclining back. The cushion folds where the back meets the seat, and we place the zipper on the hinged side.
  • 2-break: one cushion with a back, seat and leg rest, for loungers that also lift at the knees.

Double chaises, 2-break chaises and daybeds can be ordered up to 12″ thick in our chaise cushion builder.

What foam is best for a pool chaise?

Dry Fast foam is open-cell foam that lets water drain straight through, so the cushion dries quickly after rain, sprinklers or a wet swimsuit. It is the right choice for pool decks and any chaise that stays outside. For a chaise on a covered porch, High Density foam gives a supportive, medium feel. Add a Dacron wrap for a softer, rounder edge. All our foam is CertiPUR-US certified.

Why Sunbrella for a chaise?

Chaises sit in full sun for hours, which is exactly where ordinary printed fabric fades first. Sunbrella is solution-dyed acrylic, so the color runs through each fiber instead of sitting on the surface. It resists fading, mildew and stains, and covers can be machine washed. Sunbrella fabric carries a 5-year warranty from the maker, and our workmanship carries a 2-year warranty. Compare ranges in our Sunbrella fabric guide, or browse all Sunbrella outdoor cushions.

Do I need ties?

Ties keep a chaise cushion from sliding when you sit up or when the wind picks up. We add ties in matching fabric, placed where your frame needs them.

Can I replace just the covers?

Yes. If your foam still springs back when you press it, order covers only made to the foam size. If it stays dented, replace the whole cushion.

How do I keep chaise cushions looking new?

Brush off leaves and debris, rinse after heavy pool use, and clean spills with mild soap and water. Our guide on how to clean Sunbrella cushions covers tougher stains. Store cushions somewhere dry over winter, or stand them on edge so water drains out.

Frequently asked questions

How long do custom chaise cushions take?

Can you match cushions for a pair of chaises?

Yes. Order them together in the same fabric and we cut them to the same size.

Will Sunbrella chaise cushions fade by the pool?

Sunbrella resists fading from sun and pool chemicals far better than printed fabrics, because the color is part of the fiber.
