How to Find Replacement Cushions for Patio Furniture That Fit
Worn cushions and a discontinued patio set? Here's how to identify your furniture, check for factory replacements, compare standard sizes, and measure for cushions that actually fit.

Your patio frame still looks good, but the cushions are flat and faded. Worse, the store that sold the set no longer carries that collection. Here's how we'd track down cushions that fit, step by step.
Quick answer
To find replacement cushions for patio furniture, look for a label under the frame to get the brand and collection name. Then check the maker's site for cushions sold by collection. If the line is discontinued, measure the frame and the old cushion, compare them to standard sizes, and order made-to-measure cushions if nothing matches.
How do I find the brand and model of my patio furniture?
Start with the label on the frame, which often shows the brand, collection or item number. If the tag is gone, your purchase records usually fill the gap.
- Turn one chair over in good light. Check under the seat frame, the cross rails, the back of the rear legs and inside each arm.
- Photograph any label with the flash on. Faded print often reads better zoomed in on screen.
- Search your email for the store name plus "patio" or "outdoor." Order confirmations usually name the collection.
- Check your purchase history in the store's app.
- Look for the assembly manual. The model number is usually on the cover.
- Unzip the old cushion and check for a label inside. Some list a SKU or collection name.
- Still stuck? Take a clear photo of the whole frame and run a reverse image search.
Does the original maker still sell replacement cushions?
Sometimes, but usually only for current or recent collections. Once a line is dropped, its cushions tend to disappear too.
Some brands make the search easy. Frontgate lists replacement cushions by collection name, such as its Grayson Seating Replacement Cushions. POLYWOOD's help center says each product page has an Add-Ons section showing cushions "designed to perfectly fit this product." Home Depot sells a Hampton Bay one-piece dining chair cushion and names the Hampton Bay collections it fits on the listing.
Search the maker's site for your collection name plus "replacement cushions," or call with the item number. If they have your size in a color you like, buy theirs.
The trouble starts with older sets. Searches for discontinued patio furniture replacement cushions often lead to generic sizes that are close but not quite right. If your set came from a brand we hear about a lot, start with our pages for Hampton Bay replacement cushions, Martha Stewart patio replacement cushions, Frontgate replacement cushions and POLYWOOD replacement cushions.
What are the standard sizes for patio cushions?
There's no single standard. Each type of furniture has a common range, and sizes vary by an inch or more between brands.
Here's what we found listed across major home improvement stores, big-box retailers and furniture brands:
| Furniture type | Common seat size (width x depth) | Back or overall size | Thickness seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining chair | 18–24" x 17–20" | One-piece styles about 36" long overall | 2.5–4" |
| Standard club or wicker chair | 20–21" x 20–21" | Varies by frame | Varies |
| Deep seat chair | 22–24" x 24" | Back about 25–28" wide x 22–22.5" tall | 5–6.5" |
| Chaise lounge | 72–80" long x 21–23" wide | Back section about 25–30" of the length | 3" |
| Loveseat | About 46–48" x 24" overall | Often sold as a 3-piece set | Varies |
| Bench or settee | 44–48" x 18" | Seat only | 3.5–4" |
For more sizes, see our standard outdoor cushion sizes chart.
Listed sizes aren't always real sizes. On a Target listing for a 24 x 24 inch deep seat cushion, several buyers said theirs measured about 23 x 23.
Why don't standard-size replacement cushions fit my patio furniture?
Frames come in far more sizes than cushions do. A cushion can match on width and still miss on depth, shape or ties.
- Seat depth. A cushion that's too shallow slides forward when you sit.
- Back height. Too short looks shrunken. Too tall flops over the top of the frame.
- Corner shape. Many chairs have angled arms, so the seat is narrower at the back than the front. That needs a trapezoid cushion. Others need rounded front corners.
- Tie positions. Ties have to line up with a rail or slat. If they don't, the cushion can blow away in a strong wind.
- Thickness. A thicker seat raises you up and pushes the back cushion forward.
How do I measure for replacement patio cushions?
Measure both the frame and the old cushion, then compare. Old foam flattens, so the cushion alone can mislead you.
- Measure the seat width inside the arms at the front. Then measure it again at the back.
- If those two numbers differ by more than half an inch, plan on a trapezoid cushion.
- Measure seat depth from the inside of the back frame to the front edge of the seat.
- Measure the back from the seat deck to the top of the frame.
- If the corners are rounded or odd, trace the seat onto cardboard. That tracing becomes your template.
- Note where each tie needs to go, measured from the nearest corner.
- Measure the old cushion's thickness at a firm edge, not the flat middle.
Say the frame measures 25 inches inside the arms, but the old cushion reads 24. That gap was likely on purpose, so the cushion slides in easily. Our guide on how to measure for replacement outdoor cushions covers deep seating, benches and chaise lounges in more detail.
Should I replace the whole cushion or just the cover?
If the foam still springs back, you may only need new covers. If the foam is crumbling, flat or smells musty, replace the whole cushion.
To test it, press the middle of the seat hard with your palm. Good foam bounces back fully and isn't crumbly at the edges.
If the covers are only dirty, try cleaning them first. According to Sunbrella's upholstery cleaning guide, mix about a quarter cup of mild soap into a gallon of lukewarm water. Work it in with a soft brush, rinse well and let it air dry.
If the fabric is faded or torn, new Sunbrella outdoor cushion covers can be made to fit your existing foam.
Sunbrella is a solution-dyed acrylic, meaning color goes into the fiber before it's spun into yarn. Sunbrella says this is why its fabric resists fading.
What should I look for in custom replacement cushions?
Look for exact sizing, the right foam for your weather, and ties placed where your frame needs them. Custom cushions are the answer when the original line is gone or your frame is an unusual shape.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find replacement cushions if there's no label on my patio furniture?
Check your email, store app and assembly manual for the collection name. If none of those work, the brand doesn't matter much. Measure the frame carefully and order cushions made to those measurements.
Can I still buy discontinued patio furniture replacement cushions?
Sometimes you'll find leftover stock or resale listings. But sizes and colors rarely match the rest of your set. Made-to-measure cushions are usually the more reliable fix.
What size is a standard deep seat patio cushion?
Retail deep seat cushions are most often listed at 24 x 24 inches, with some at 22 x 24. They're usually 5 to 6.5 inches thick. Always measure your frame, since listed and real sizes can differ by about an inch.
Can I keep my old foam and replace only the covers?
Yes, if the foam springs back when you press it and isn't crumbling or musty. Measure the foam itself, not the old cover. That way the new cover fits snugly.
Why does my replacement cushion slide off the chair?
The cushion is often too shallow for the seat, or the ties don't line up with the frame. A cushion made to the frame's exact size with ties in the right spots usually stays put.
