Commercial Bench Seat Cushions for Schools, Clubs and Foyers
How to specify, measure and order made-to-measure bench seat cushions for Australian schools, clubs, change rooms, foyers and alfresco areas.
On this page
Quick answer: Commercial bench seat cushions should be made to the exact length and depth of each bench, use a firm high-resilience foam that recovers after heavy use, and be covered in a fabric suited to the setting: wipe-clean vinyl for change rooms and schools, durable upholstery for foyers, and outdoor fabric with quick-dry foam for alfresco benches.
Benches are everywhere in commercial spaces: school corridors, club foyers, change rooms, reception areas, chapels, waiting rooms and alfresco dining. They're simple, sturdy and space efficient, but bare timber or metal is hard and cold to sit on. A well-made cushion makes a bench usable for longer and makes the space look finished. Our commercial cushions and curtains service makes bench cushions to measure for any venue, with no minimum order.
This guide is for facilities managers, business managers, club boards, designers and builders who need to fit out one bench or a hundred. It covers measuring, foam, fabric by setting, fire testing, cleaning and how a commercial order runs.
Bench cushions by setting
| Setting | Main demands | Typical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Schools and universities | Heavy use, scuffs, food | Marine vinyl or hardwearing upholstery |
| Change rooms | Wet towels, humidity | Marine vinyl with quick-dry foam |
| Club and office foyers | Appearance, comfort, fire data | Warwick upholstery |
| Alfresco benches | Sun, rain, mould | Sunbrella with outdoor reticulated foam |
Schools and universities have their own considerations around durability and approvals. See our school and university cushions page for education projects.
Measuring benches across a site
Commercial benches are often built in place, so two that look the same may differ by several millimetres. Measure each one and give it a number on a site plan.
- Length: measure the full seat length. For very long benches, decide whether to split the cushion into sections. Sections are easier to handle, clean and replace.
- Depth: measure from front edge to wall or backrest at both ends.
- Obstacles: note posts, brackets, armrests and wall fixings that the cushion has to fit around. Notches and cut-outs can be made to template.
- Thickness: check the finished seat height. A thick cushion on a high bench can leave feet dangling.
- Photos: take a photo of each bench type from the front and side.
Our guide to measuring cushions in mm walks through each step. We make within ±13 mm of the ordered size and remake free if we miss.
Foam for heavy use
A bench cushion in a school or club gets sat on all day. Soft foam flattens quickly and looks tired within months. We use Australian-made foam from Premier Group in Sydney, a 100% Australian-owned business.
- Commercial high-resilience grades: firm, supportive and quick to recover after each sitter.
- Fire-retardant grades: available for projects that need them.
- Outdoor reticulated foam: drains and dries fast, resists mould. Ideal for alfresco benches and change rooms.
Fabric choices
- Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl: wipe-clean, good for change rooms, canteens and anywhere spills are likely.
- Warwick upholstery: Warwick, an Australian fabric house, has indoor and outdoor ranges in a wide spread of colours and textures for foyers and reception areas.
- Sunbrella: solution-dyed and fade resistant for outdoor and sunny spots. Most is water-repellent rather than waterproof.
Order swatches to check colour and texture on site. They're paid, and the cost is credited back via a one-time code on your order. You can browse ready-to-configure options in our bench cushions collection.
Change rooms and wet areas
Change rooms are one of the toughest places for a cushion. Wet swimmers, damp towels, steam and poor airflow all work against fabric and foam. Marine vinyl over outdoor reticulated foam is the practical combination: the vinyl wipes clean, and the open-cell foam lets any water that gets in drain and dry quickly. Keep cushions slightly thinner here so they dry faster, and ask staff to stand them on edge at closing if the room stays humid overnight.
Fire testing
Public buildings, schools and clubs often need fabric fire test data. Warwick fabrics are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3, with ranges such as Ronan, Dion, Beachcomber and Lustrell Charisma scoring 0 out of 10 for spread of flame. We attach the maker's test report for your fabric to the quote or spec sheet, and match fabric and foam to the requirement you give us. Your certifier or building surveyor has the final say on the installation. Read our fire safety fabrics guide for more.
Cleaning and upkeep
- Wipe vinyl daily with mild soapy water and let it dry.
- Vacuum upholstery weekly, paying attention to seams.
- Unzip covers for deeper cleaning as the fabric's care guide allows.
- Flip and rotate sections so wear is spread evenly along a long bench.
- Stand outdoor cushions on edge after rain to drain.
Mistakes to avoid
- Ordering one long cushion for a very long bench instead of sections.
- Forgetting posts and brackets that need cut-outs.
- Using indoor foam on an alfresco bench.
- Choosing a soft foam because it feels nice in the showroom.
- Not asking the certifier about fire requirements before ordering.
- Not leaving time in the program for approvals and production.
Budgeting
Bench cushion costs depend on total length, depth, thickness, fabric and foam grade. To make the budget go further, standardise on one or two fabrics across the site, order covers alone where existing foam is sound, and phase the work by building or area. Check whether figures are ex or inc GST before comparing quotes.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make very long bench cushions?
Yes. For long runs we usually recommend sections that butt together, which are easier to handle, clean and replace.
Can cushions fit around posts or brackets?
Yes. Send a template or detailed measurements and we'll make notches or cut-outs to suit.
How do bench cushions stay in place?
Ties in matching fabric are standard and Velcro is available on request. Many fixed benches with a back or side walls hold the cushion in place on their own.
Is there a minimum order?
No. We make one bench cushion or a whole campus, all to measure.
What warranty do commercial bench cushions have?
Fabric carries a 5-year warranty from the fabric partner, workmanship 2 years, and foam warranty depends on the grade chosen.
