A practical guide to made-to-measure banquette seating cushions for Australian cafés, restaurants and homes, from measuring and foam to fabric, fire testing and ordering.

Made-to-measure banquette seating cushions in a muted green fabric along a timber bench in a sunlit Australian café

Quick answer: Good banquette seating cushions are made to the exact length, depth and shape of the bench, with a firm high-resilience foam seat, a supportive back, and a fabric matched to how the space is used. For cafés and restaurants that usually means a wipe-clean marine vinyl or a durable Warwick upholstery fabric. For homes it means comfort and a colour you can live with for years.

Built-in banquettes save floor space and seat more people per square metre than loose chairs. The cushions are what make them work. Get the size or the foam wrong and guests perch on the edge, slide forward, or leave early. Get it right and the banquette becomes the most requested spot in the room. Our custom banquette cushions for cafés and restaurants are made to measure, with no minimum order, so you can do one breakfast nook or every booth in a venue.

This guide covers what a business buyer needs to decide: measuring, foam, fabric, fire testing, cleaning, budgeting and how a commercial order runs from quote to delivery. Most of it applies equally to a family kitchen nook.

Measuring banquette seating properly

Banquettes are rarely perfectly square. Walls lean, corners are not quite 90 degrees and joiners leave small differences between runs. Measure every bench, not one and multiply.

  1. Seat length: measure along the front edge and along the back against the wall. If they differ, note both.
  2. Seat depth: measure from the front edge of the timber to the wall or the back cushion line, at each end and in the middle.
  3. Back height: measure from the top of the seat cushion line to where you want the back cushion to finish.
  4. Corners and L-shapes: decide whether the corner is one piece or two pieces that butt together. Two pieces are easier to make and to replace.
  5. Angled ends and curves: make a paper or cardboard template and send a photo with the measurements.

Work in millimetres throughout and label each bench with a number on a simple floor plan. Our step-by-step guide to measuring cushions in mm shows how to record each dimension. We make to within ±13 mm of the ordered size, and if we miss that we remake the cushion free.

Foam for seats and backs

A banquette seat gets more use than almost any other cushion in a venue. People slide in sideways, sit on the front edge and lean back hard. That calls for a firmer, denser foam than you would use on a home sofa.

  • Seat cushions: a commercial high-resilience grade holds its shape under constant turnover. Our foam is Australian-made by Premier Group in Sydney.
  • Back cushions: usually slightly softer and thinner than the seat, so guests are supported without being pushed forward.
  • Thickness: deeper isn't always better. A thick seat raises guests relative to the table, so check the seat-to-table height before choosing.
  • Fire-retardant grades: available for projects that need them. Tell us at quote stage.

Choosing fabric for commercial banquettes

Fabric choice comes down to three questions: how often it gets spilled on, how it will be cleaned, and what the fit-out calls for visually.

Fabric Best for Cleaning
Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl Busy cafés, family restaurants, breakfast service Wipe clean between services
Warwick upholstery Restaurants, wine bars, hotel dining, homes Spot clean; removable zipped covers
Sunbrella upholstery Covered alfresco banquettes and sunny windows Removable covers are machine washable

For high-spill seating, our Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl cushions are the practical choice. For a softer, more residential look, Warwick, an Australian fabric house, has a large range of indoor and outdoor upholstery fabrics. Order swatches before you commit; they're paid, and the cost is credited back with a one-time code on your order.

Fire testing and your certifier

Many commercial fit-outs need upholstery fabrics with fire test data. Warwick fabrics are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3, and ranges such as Ronan, Dion, Beachcomber and Lustrell Charisma score 0 out of 10 for spread of flame. Sunbrella upholstery fabrics and Horizon marine vinyl have their own test results from the maker.

We supply the maker's test reports with your quote or spec sheet, and we match fabric and foam to the requirement you give us. We don't certify finished installations: your certifier, building surveyor or local fire authority has the final say. Read more on our fire safety fabrics page.

Cleaning between services

  • Wipe vinyl with a damp cloth and mild soapy water after each service. Avoid harsh solvents.
  • Vacuum crumbs from seams and the seat-back join daily.
  • For upholstery, blot spills straight away and spot clean. Zipped removable covers can be taken off for deeper cleaning as the care label allows.
  • Keep a spare cover or two for the busiest booths so a stained cushion can be swapped mid-week.

Banquettes at home

A kitchen nook gets less traffic than a café booth, but it still takes daily use from kids, pets and dinner guests. A slightly softer seat foam, ties in matching fabric to stop sliding, and a performance fabric in a colour that suits the room make a nook comfortable and easy to live with. Mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring one bench and assuming the rest match.
  • Choosing seat thickness without checking table height.
  • Picking a fabric from a screen photo instead of a swatch in your venue's lighting.
  • Leaving fire test requirements until after the order is placed.
  • Making a long run as one huge cushion when sections would be easier to clean and replace.
  • Ordering no spare covers for the hardest-working seats.

How a commercial order works

  1. Brief: send your measurements, photos, quantities and any fire or fabric requirements through our bulk cushion enquiry form, or email operation@fabricakraft.com.
  2. Swatches: we help you shortlist fabrics and send samples.
  3. Spec sheet: you receive a spec sheet with a drawing of each cushion. Nothing is cut until you approve it.
  4. Production: standard shapes take 2 to 3 weeks; custom shapes from your template take 5 to 6 weeks. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost.
  5. Delivery: shipping is free within Australia. Plan installation around a quiet day or a closure.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum order for banquette cushions?

No. We make one cushion or a whole venue, all to measure.

Can you match existing cushions?

Often, yes. Send measurements, photos and a note of the current fabric. If the original fabric is still available we can quote it, or suggest a close alternative from swatches.

Are the covers removable?

Yes. Covers have zips so they can be removed for cleaning. You can also order replacement covers without foam, or new foam on its own.

What warranty applies?

Fabric carries a 5-year warranty from the fabric partner and our workmanship is covered for 2 years. Foam warranty depends on the grade. There's no warranty on customer-supplied fabric.

Can I supply my own fabric?

Yes. Confirm the required quantity with us first, then send the fabric to us for making up.
