Choosing the right size

In a living room, pick a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. Under a dining table, allow about 24 inches beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Leave a strip of floor showing around the edges so the room doesn't feel crowded.
