Measuring crates and pens
Measure the inside, not the outside. Crate makers quote external sizes, and the wire, frame or tray lip takes up space.
- Measure the internal floor width and depth at the base of each crate type.
- Check whether the tray has a raised lip or rounded corners, and note it.
- For built-in pens, measure each one. Pens built on site are rarely identical.
- Decide the mat thickness. Deeper mats are softer but raise the dog closer to the crate roof.
- Group identical crates and give each size a code, such as Size A for all large wire crates.
We make every mat to within 6 mm (maximum ±2.5 cm) of the ordered size. If we miss that, we remake it free. For crates with odd shapes, such as corner pens, send a template and we will quote it as a custom shape.
Foam and thickness
Our UK foam is made and cut by GB Foam in High Wycombe, an ISO 9001 manufacturer working since 1976. It meets UK fire safety regulations for upholstered furniture.
- Crate mats: a firm foam holds its shape under repeated use and does not bottom out under bigger dogs.
- Rest-area beds: a thicker, slightly softer foam is comfortable for longer stays.
- Older dogs: extra thickness can help, but check that the dog can still step in and out easily.
Thickness in the online builder goes up to 8 inches (about 20 cm). Thicker beds can be quoted by email.

Spare covers and a simple cleaning routine
Every mat has a zipped, removable cover. That is what makes made-to-measure mats practical for a business.
- Keep at least one spare cover for each crate size, more for your busiest pens.
- Swap a soiled cover straight away and clean it as a batch.
- Covers can be reordered on their own later, and foam can be ordered alone.
- Use one fabric and colour across the site so spare covers fit any mat of the same size.
No cushion is chew-resistant. Dogs that chew bedding should be supervised or given a different arrangement, following your own welfare policy.
Grooming salons and day cares
Groomers and day cares use cushions a little differently from boarding kennels. Dogs are on site for hours, not nights, and the space is often shared with owners at drop-off and collection.
- Drying and waiting crates: thinner, wipe-clean mats are easier to turn round between dogs.
- Day care rest areas: larger beds in a washable woven fabric give dogs a settled place to nap.
- Reception: a made-to-measure bench cushion in a wipe-clean fabric gives owners somewhere tidy to sit, and can match the mats for a consistent look.

Standard shapes take 2 to 3 weeks to make; custom shapes from a template take 5 to 6 weeks. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost. Delivery across the UK is free and shipped DDP, so there is no duty or VAT to pay on arrival. There is no minimum order, so you can start with your busiest crate size and add the rest later.
