Large Floor Cushions: Sizes, Foam and Fabric for Every Room
Big floor cushions make extra seating, reading nooks and kids' corners. Here's how to choose the size, thickness, foam and fabric.

Quick answer: For a large floor cushion you will sit on, choose at least 600 mm square and 100–150 mm thick, with firm foam so it doesn't flatten. For lounging or a kids' reading corner, go bigger: a 900 × 600 mm rectangle or a 760 mm round. Use a zipped, washable cover, and Sunbrella fabric if it will live on a deck or in a playroom.
Large floor cushions are one of the easiest ways to add seating without adding furniture. They tuck under a coffee table, stack in a corner when guests leave, and turn any rug into a place to sit. The difference between a floor cushion that gets used and one that ends up as a dog bed usually comes down to size, thickness and foam.

Choosing the thickness
Thickness matters more than most people expect. A cushion that is too thin feels like sitting on the floor; one that is too thick wobbles. For a seat at a coffee table, go for 150–200 mm so your knees sit lower than your hips. For lying on, or for children, 100–150 mm is comfortable and stable. For meditation, a firm 100 mm cushion is the usual choice.
Foam: why firm matters for big cushions
The bigger the cushion, the more weight lands on one spot. Soft foam flattens quickly under a seated adult. Choose a firm, high-density foam for anything you sit on, and add a Dacron wrap if you want softer, rounded edges. All foam for Australian orders is made in Australia by Premier Group in Sydney. For outdoor floor cushions, quick-dry foam lets rain drain straight through.
Bean-bag style fills move around and slump over time. Foam keeps a neat shape, which matters if the cushions are part of your lounge room's look.
Fabric for floor cushions
- Lounge rooms and bedrooms: Warwick indoor fabrics and velvet for warmth and texture.
- Kids' rooms and playrooms: Sunbrella upholstery fabrics. They are easy to clean and the zip-off covers are machine washable.
- Decks, verandahs and pool areas: Sunbrella outdoor fabrics, which resist fading and mould.
- Faux leather: wipe-clean, and a good match for a leather lounge.
Every floor cushion has a zipped, removable cover, so you can wash it or swap the colour later by ordering a new cover on its own.
Ideas for using large floor cushions
- Coffee-table seating: two or four square cushions slide under the table when not in use.
- Reading nook: a rectangular floor cushion with a bolster against the wall makes a low daybed.
- Kids' corner: a big rectangle and a few round cushions in bright colours.
