A bolster cushion is the long, round roll that finishes a lounge, a daybed or a bed. Shop-bought bolsters come in two or three lengths, so they rarely fit the arm of your lounge or the end of your window seat. We make bolster cushions to the exact length and diameter you need, in Sunbrella for outdoors or Warwick for indoors, with Australian-made foam and free shipping anywhere in Australia.
Where bolsters work best
- Lounges and sofas: a bolster along each arm softens a modern lounge and gives you something to lean on.
- Outdoor daybeds and sun lounges: bolsters at the back or ends turn a flat mattress into somewhere you can sit up and read. See our daybed and sun lounger cushions.
- Window seats and benches: a bolster at each end stops scatter cushions sliding off and frames the seat. See window seat cushions.
- Beds: a long bolster across the bedhead is a neat alternative to a pile of scatter cushions.
- Neck rolls and yoga: short, firm bolsters for reading, recovery and restorative classes.
Choosing the size
- Length: measure where the bolster will sit, from end to end. For a lounge arm, measure the depth of the seat. For a bed or daybed, measure the full width, or slightly less if you want a gap at each end.
- Diameter: decide how high you want the roll to stand. Around 150 mm suits a neck roll or slim lounge arm; 200–250 mm suits daybeds and beds.
- Enter your exact sizes in the builder. Every bolster is made within 13 mm of your measurements, and if we miss that we remake it free.
Fabric and foam
- Sunbrella for verandahs, decks and poolside: solution-dyed, fade resistant and mould resistant, with zip-off covers that are machine washable.
- Warwick for lounge rooms and bedrooms, from Australia's well-known fabric house, in textures from linen-look to bouclé.
- Foam: every Australian order uses Australian-made foam from Premier Group in Sydney. Choose a firm core for support or a softer wrap for a relaxed look.
- Finishing: optional piping, and a zipped, removable cover on every bolster.

Styling bolsters and cushions together
A simple rule: one bolster per end, then two or three square scatter cushions in front. Pick the bolster in a solid colour from your main fabric, and use the scatter cushions for pattern. On a daybed, match the bolster to the mattress so it reads as one piece. On a lounge, a contrasting bolster with piping in the main colour looks tailored without being busy.

Common questions
What is the difference between a bolster and a cushion?
A bolster is long and round, like a roll. A cushion or scatter cushion is usually square or rectangular. Bolsters are used at the ends of lounges, daybeds and beds for support and to frame the seat.
Can bolsters stay outside?
Yes, in Sunbrella fabric with outdoor foam. Bringing them in during long wet spells helps them last longer.
Can I order just a cover for my old bolster?
Yes. Choose cover only and enter the length and diameter of your existing insert.
Do you make bolsters for yoga studios?
Yes. See our guide to yoga bolsters and meditation cushions, or send a bulk enquiry.
