About this collection

A seat cushion only works if it sits flush with the edges of the seat. We make custom seat cushions and chair pads to the exact shape and size of your seat, for dining chairs, kitchen and bar stools, benches, window seats and outdoor chairs. There is no minimum order, so order one pad or a full set.

For a tapered dining seat, choose the trapezoid cushion. For a round stool or chair, use the round cushion builder. Need a back pad too? Try the seat and back chair cushions. For a bench or window seat, use the bench cushion builder.

How to measure a seat

  • Measure the front width, the back width and the depth from front to back.
  • If the back corners are cut out around the chair posts, measure each notch.
  • For a curved or unusual seat, trace it on paper and send a photo of the template next to a tape measure.

Every cushion is cut to within ±0.5″ of the size you order.

Foam and thickness

For dining and kitchen seats, choose firm Luxury foam at 1″ to 3″ so the seat height barely changes. For benches and window seats, High Density foam at 3″ to 5″ is the most comfortable. Outdoors, Dry Fast foam drains and dries quickly. All foam is CertiPUR-US certified and cut in the USA.

Fabric, ties and finishing

Ties in matching fabric are standard, and Velcro is available on request. Indoors, choose Warwick, velvet or faux leather. For patios and sunrooms, choose Sunbrella in 160+ colours. Piping is optional.

Questions about custom seat cushions

Quick answers about sizing, fabrics, foam and delivery.

How do I measure a chair seat for a custom cushion? + −

Measure the front width, the back width and the depth from front to back. If the back corners are notched around chair posts, measure the width and depth of each notch. For a curved or unusual seat, trace it on paper and send a photo of the template beside a tape measure. Replacing an old cushion? Measure the foam edge to edge, not the cover. Our measuring guide shows each shape.

How thick should a seat cushion be? + −

For dining and kitchen chairs, a thin, firm pad of 1–3 inches keeps the seat height close to the table. For benches, window seats and lounge chairs, 3–5 inches feels most comfortable. The builder goes up to 8 inches, and thicker cushions are available by quote. If you are unsure which to pick, firm Lux foam holds its shape best on a thin dining pad, while High Density foam gives a softer, medium feel.

Can you make a round, tapered or curved seat cushion? + −

Yes. For a stool or round chair, use the round cushion builder; for a seat that is wider at the front than the back, choose a trapezoid cushion. For curves, scallops or cut-outs, choose the unique-shape option and send us a paper template after checkout. We confirm the cut before we start. Template shapes take 5–6 weeks rather than 2–3.

How do I stop a seat cushion from sliding? + −

Ties in matching fabric come standard, so you can fasten the cushion around the chair posts or back spindles. Velcro is available on request for seats without posts. We do not add non-slip or rubber backing, because it stops the covers being machine washable. A snug, accurate size also helps the cushion stay put.

Which fabric is best for seat cushions? + −

For kitchens, dining rooms and family spaces, Sunbrella is the practical pick: most of its fabrics repel water and stains, and the covers are machine washable. For a softer indoor look, choose Warwick, velvet or faux leather. On a patio or in a sunroom, pair Sunbrella with Dry Fast foam. To compare textures before you order, see our fabric swatches.

Can I order just a cover or just the foam? + −

Yes. Every builder offers a complete cushion, a cover only or foam only, and there is no minimum order, so one pad or a full set of eight is fine. For a cover, give us the size of your foam edge to edge; covers are made to fit snugly, measured seam to seam. Every cover has a zipper so it comes off for washing.

How long do seat cushions take, and where do you ship? + −

Standard shapes are made and shipped in 2–3 weeks; shapes cut from your template take 5–6 weeks. We deliver complete cushions free to the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. UK and Canadian orders arrive with import duty and tax already paid, and GST is handled for you on Australian orders, so there is nothing more to pay on delivery.
