Quick answer: Yes. Our custom cushions have a zip so the cover can be removed. On bench and seat cushions the zip runs along the back edge, out of sight; on hinged chaise cushions it sits on the hinged side. A removable cover lets you wash it, replace the foam or order a new cover in a different fabric without replacing the whole cushion.

It is one of the most common questions we get: will my custom cushion have a zip? The short answer is yes. Here is where it goes and why it matters.

Where the zip goes

  • Bench, window seat and banquette cushions: along the back edge, running edge to edge so the foam slides in and out easily. Turned to the wall, you won't see it.
  • Chaise and hinged lounge cushions: on the hinged side, where it stays out of sight.
  • Daybed and mattress-style cushions: around the back and onto the sides, so a thick foam block can be fitted.

Why a removable cover matters

  1. Cleaning: take the cover off to wash it or deal with a spill properly. Many outdoor covers, including Sunbrella, can be machine washed; check the care label first.
  2. Drying: after heavy rain you can unzip the cover to help the foam dry, which helps prevent mould.
  3. Replacing foam: foam softens over the years. Replace just the foam, not the whole cushion.
  4. Changing the look: order a new cover in a different fabric and reuse your foam.

Tips for putting a cover back on

  • Fold the foam slightly lengthways to slide it in, then let it open out.
  • Line up the corners before closing the zip.
  • Make sure the cover and foam are fully dry before zipping them together.

Zips on outdoor cushions

Outdoor cushions get rain, sand and sunscreen. Keep the zip side facing the backrest, out of direct sun and spray. Brush sand out of the zip teeth before opening it. Replacing a worn outdoor cover? See Sunbrella cushion covers.

How to wash a zipped cover

  1. Unzip the cover and slide the foam out.
  2. Close the zip again so the teeth don't snag in the wash.
  3. Wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, if the care label allows.
  4. Air dry, out of direct heat.
  5. Make sure the cover is fully dry before you refit it over the foam.

Ties and Velcro

A zip keeps the cover on the foam; ties keep the cushion on the seat. Ties in matching fabric are standard, and Velcro is available on request.

Swapping foam through the zip

When foam softens, measure the inside of the cover seam to seam and order foam to that size. Fold the new foam lengthways, slide it in and ease the corners into place. If it arrives vacuum-packed, give it 12–18 hours to expand first. Want a different feel? See our foam thickness guide.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Forcing a stuck zip. Clear any sand or grit first.
  • Washing the foam. Only the cover goes in the machine.
  • Putting a cover back on damp foam, which traps moisture.

Accuracy and warranty

We cut every cushion within ±13 mm of your measurements, and our workmanship is covered for 2 years. GST is handled for you on every Australian order; see import duty and GST.

What if a zip breaks?

Zips wear over time, especially on outdoor cushions that get sand in them. If yours fails, you can order a new cover on its own and keep your foam. Our workmanship warranty covers faults in how a cushion is made for 2 years; email care@fabricakraft.com with your order number and a photo.

Zips on curtains and throw pillows

Throw pillow covers also close with a zip, so you can wash the cover or swap the insert. Curtains don't need one: they hang from a pole or track by their tabs, pocket or pleats, and come down whole for cleaning.

Buying parts separately

You can order a complete cushion, a cover on its own, or foam on its own. See custom covers and replacement foam or custom cut foam. For cleaning tips, read how to remove mould from outdoor cushions. Shipping is free anywhere in Australia, and prices are shown in AUD.
