Cushion Size & Foam Guide

Not sure what size, thickness or foam to order? Pick your furniture, enter the size of your old cushion or seat, and this guide suggests the thickness and foam most people choose for it, then sends you to the right builder.

How to measure a cushion

  • Replacing a cushion? Unzip the old cover and measure the foam itself, edge to edge. Covers stretch over time, so the foam is more accurate.
  • Measuring the cover? Measure seam to seam, not over the piping. Piping adds about ¼″.
  • No old cushion? Measure the seat of the frame and take about ½″ off each side so the cushion fits inside it.
  • Odd shapes: for tapered, rounded or notched seats, send a paper template. Our measuring guide walks through each shape.

We cut every cushion to within ±0.5″ of the size you order. If it arrives outside that, we remake it free.

Foam firmness guide

Foam Feel Best for Density / firmness
High Density Medium Everyday seats: sofas, benches, window seats, patio chairs 2.8 lb/ft³, 35 lb ILD
Luxury Firm Dining chairs and thin seats from 1″ to 3″ 2.8 lb/ft³, 50 lb ILD
Dry Fast Firm, open-cell Cushions that get rained on: pools, boats, open patios. Water drains straight through. 1.8 lb/ft³, 60 lb ILD
Super Soft Soft Back cushions only, never seats 1.2 lb/ft³, 12 lb ILD

A 1″ Dacron wrap around the foam gives a softer, rounder edge; don't take it off your measurements. All our foam is CertiPUR-US certified. ILD is the force needed to compress the foam: the higher the number, the firmer it feels.

How thick should a cushion be?

3″ to 5″ is standard for most seats. Dining chairs and benches at table height usually take 2″ to 3″ so you stay at the right height. Sofa seats take 4″ to 6″. We cut foam up to 8″; for anything thicker, email operation@fabricakraft.com for a quote.

These are suggestions from what our customers usually choose. You can pick any thickness and foam in the builder.
