How to measure a window seat

Measure the seat length wall to wall at the front and again at the back, since walls are rarely square. Then measure the depth. For a bay window, measure the front edge and back edge of each angled section, or send us a paper template. Our window seat measuring guide shows each step.

Choosing the foam

  • High Density: medium feel for everyday seats, benches and sofas
  • Lux foam: firm, best for dining seats 1–3″ thick and heavy daily use
  • Super Soft: soft, for back cushions only, never seats
  • Dacron wrap (add-on): a softer, rounder edge for sofa and window seat cushions

Indoor fabrics

Choose from Warwick upholstery (Australian, made for indoor furniture), velvet, Warwick faux leather and Sunbrella for homes with kids, pets or sun-filled rooms. Not sure about a color? Order swatches first.

Questions about window seat cushions

How thick should a window seat cushion be?

2″ to 4″ suits most window seats. Check the height under the window sill so the cushion does not block it, and allow for the extra height if you add Dacron wrap.

Will the cushion fit tightly between two walls?

Yes. We cut to within ±0.5″ of the size you send. For a seat boxed in by walls, give us the exact wall-to-wall size and we cut to it.

Can you make a bay window cushion in one piece?

Yes, up to the size of a single foam sheet. Long or angled seats are often easier to fit and clean in two or three pieces.

Do you sell sun-resistant fabric for a sunny window?

Yes. Sunbrella is made for strong sun and resists fading, so it suits south-facing windows and sunrooms.

Custom bay window seat cushion with angled ends in natural linen-look fabric

A window seat is usually built in, so a store-bought cushion rarely fits. We make custom window seat cushions to the exact length and depth of your seat, whether it is a straight seat under a window, a bay window with angled ends, or a corner nook.

Start with the window seat cushion builder for straight and bay seats. For angled ends, choose a tapered cushion; for corner and wraparound seats, an L-shaped cushion or a T-shaped cushion. Finish the nook with bolsters at each end and throw pillows against the glass.

Pick Sunbrella for a seat that gets strong sun, or Warwick, velvet and faux leather for a cozier reading corner. Choose your foam and finishing, such as piping and a zippered cover, and the price updates as you go. In-stock fabrics ship in about 2 weeks and other fabrics in about 4 weeks, with free shipping.

Window Seat Cushion FAQs

Quick answers about sizing, fabrics, foam and delivery.

How do I measure a window seat cushion? + −

Measure the seat itself, not an old cushion: the length from wall to wall or end to end, and the depth from the wall to the front edge. If the seat sits in a bay with angled ends, also measure the back length along the wall. Enter the measurements in the builder and choose the matching shape.

Can you make a cushion for a bay window with angled ends? + −

Yes. Choose a tapered (trapezoid) shape for a seat with angled ends, or an L-shaped or T-shaped cushion for corner and bay seats. We cut it to the front and back lengths you give us.

How thick should a window seat cushion be? + −

Most window seats take a 2 to 4 inch cushion. Thinner cushions keep the seat height comfortable under a low window; thicker ones feel more like a reading nook. The builder shows the price for each thickness.

Which fabric is best for a sunny window seat? + −

For a seat in strong sun, choose Sunbrella, which is solution-dyed and holds its color. Warwick fabrics and velvets suit window seats with less direct sun.

How long does a custom window seat cushion take? + −

Cushions in in-stock fabrics ship in about 2 weeks, and other fabrics in about 4 weeks, with free shipping.
