Sunbrella Cushion FAQ
160 answers about Sunbrella fabric and Sunbrella cushions: fading, waterproofing, mildew, cleaning, safety, styling, setup, sewing, warranty, buying and trade.
Sunbrella fabric basics
What is Sunbrella fabric?
Sunbrella is a performance fabric brand made by Glen Raven, Inc., a family-owned company based in North Carolina. Its color and UV-stable pigments are locked into the fiber before it is spun (solution dyeing), so Sunbrella resists fading, stains and mildew and can be cleaned with diluted bleach. Learn more from Sunbrella.
What is Sunbrella made of?
Most Sunbrella upholstery fabric is 100% solution-dyed acrylic; some styles blend in a little polyester. Specialty lines differ: Sunbrella Horizon is a marine vinyl, Sunbrella Rain has a waterproof backing, and Sling is a coated mesh. Fiber content is listed for each fabric.
What are Sunbrella cushions?
Sunbrella cushions are cushions covered in genuine Sunbrella® fabric. At Fabrica Kraft, every Sunbrella cushion is cut and sewn to your exact measurements and filled with CertiPUR-US® certified foam. Browse all Sunbrella cushions.
Does Sunbrella make cushions?
No. Sunbrella makes the fabric only; cushions, furniture, umbrellas and boat covers made with it are produced by independent manufacturers such as Fabrica Kraft. Source: Sunbrella Help Center.
When was Sunbrella invented?
Sunbrella launched in 1961 as a longer-lasting, 100% acrylic replacement for cotton awning canvas. It later expanded into marine, upholstery and indoor fabrics.
Where is Sunbrella fabric made?
Sunbrella's flagship weaving plant is in Anderson, South Carolina, with acrylic yarn made in Norlina, North Carolina. Glen Raven also makes Sunbrella in France and China for international markets. Sunbrella sustainability.
How do I know a cushion is made with genuine Sunbrella fabric?
Look for a sewn-in Sunbrella tag, which manufacturers add to show the fabric is genuine, and ask the seller for the exact Sunbrella fabric name and style number so you can check it on sunbrella.com. Every Fabrica Kraft Sunbrella cushion carries a Sunbrella × Fabrica Kraft collaboration tag approved by Glen Raven.
Are “made with Sunbrella” cushions from big-box stores the same quality?
The fabric can be genuine Sunbrella, but the foam, fill, thread, zippers and stitching are chosen by the cushion maker, and those parts usually wear out first. Sunbrella's warranty covers the fabric only (see what it covers), so build quality depends on who made the cushion.
What is the difference between Sunbrella upholstery and marine or awning fabric?
Upholstery fabric is softer and made for seating. Marine and shade (awning) fabrics are stiffer, have a heavier water-repellent finish and are designed to shed water when stretched on a frame. For cushions, upholstery-grade Sunbrella is the right choice. Widths differ too: see fabric widths.
How wide is Sunbrella fabric?
Most Sunbrella upholstery fabric is 54 inches wide. Shade and marine fabrics are usually 46 inches wide, with some styles at 60 or 80 inches. Sunbrella Help Center.
How heavy is Sunbrella upholstery fabric?
It depends on the style. A classic Sunbrella Canvas upholstery fabric weighs about 7.8 oz per square yard, the Rain version about 8.3 oz, and some Fusion styles about 12 oz. Each fabric's technical sheet lists its exact weight.
What is Sunbrella Interiors?
Sunbrella Interiors is Sunbrella's indoor-focused collection of upholstery, drapery and throws. It brings the same stain resistance, fade resistance and bleach-cleanability to colors and textures designed for living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.
What is Sunbrella Rain?
Sunbrella Rain is an upholstery fabric with a polyurethane-coated back that acts as a moisture barrier. It is waterproof as a fabric, but a finished cushion only stays dry inside if it is sewn the right way, because water can still enter through stitch holes and seams. Rain fabric shouldn't be machine washed, because washing can damage the barrier.
What is Sunbrella Fusion?
Sunbrella Fusion is a heavier solution-dyed upholstery line with richer textures and patterns that resist pilling. Some Fusion styles weigh about 12 oz per square yard and are rated around 100,000 double rubs for abrasion, so they suit heavily used seating.
What is Sunbrella Horizon?
Sunbrella Horizon is Sunbrella's marine-grade vinyl for boat seats and wet areas. It resists cold cracking and pink microbial staining, can be cleaned with diluted bleach and carries a 5-year warranty plus 3 years against pink staining. It can't be machine washed. Sunbrella Horizon · Sunbrella Horizon boat cushions.
How many Sunbrella colors are there for cushions?
Sunbrella offers hundreds of colors and patterns. Fabrica Kraft stocks 160+ Sunbrella colors for custom cushions, plus Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl. Explore fabrics or see stripes and patterns.
Can I use Sunbrella cushions indoors?
Yes. Sunbrella is popular indoors for window seats, mudroom benches, banquettes, dining chairs and homes with kids or pets, because spills clean up easily and the color holds in sunny rooms. See window seat, bench & mudroom and banquette cushions.
Does Sunbrella feel rough or scratchy?
Not usually. Classic Canvas styles feel like a soft, sturdy canvas, and some textures are softer still (see the softest indoor-style weaves). Feel varies by weave, so order a swatch if it matters to you.
Durability and fading
Do Sunbrella cushions fade in the sun?
Sunbrella is highly fade-resistant but not fade-proof. Because the color is locked into the fiber, sunlight doesn't wash out a surface dye the way it does on printed polyester. Color loss that makes the fabric unserviceable is covered by Sunbrella's 5-year limited warranty.
Will Sunbrella fade in a sunny room indoors?
Sunbrella says its fabrics resist fading in rooms with lots of natural light, because color and UV protection are built into the fiber. That makes it a good choice for window seats and sunrooms.
How long do Sunbrella cushions last?
Sunbrella doesn't publish a lifespan in years. The upholstery fabric carries a 5-year limited warranty and owners often report many more years of use. In most cushions the foam wears out before the fabric, so foam choice matters as much as fabric.
Are Sunbrella cushions worth the money?
For outdoor or high-use seating, usually yes. Sunbrella costs more than olefin or printed polyester, but it holds its color, can be bleach-cleaned and is backed by a fabric warranty from the maker, so the covers typically outlast cheaper cushions by years.
Does Sunbrella pill?
Sunbrella separates pilling from fuzziness. A light fuzz is normal on soft, ring-spun yarns and doesn't lead to pilling. True pilling (small balls of fiber) can happen in high-traffic spots, and Sunbrella's upholstery warranty covers pilling that makes the fabric unserviceable.
How durable is Sunbrella for everyday seating?
Very durable. Abrasion ratings vary by style; for example, a classic Sunbrella Canvas upholstery fabric is rated about 45,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs and some Fusion styles about 100,000, well above typical residential requirements.
Does Sunbrella shrink?
It can, if exposed to heat such as a clothes dryer or hot water (see drying). If a cover has tightened, re-wet it and let it dry while fitted on the cushion; that often relaxes it back into shape.
Can faded Sunbrella be re-dyed?
Generally no. Because Sunbrella is solution-dyed acrylic, household fabric dyes don't take well and fabric paint wears off outdoors. A thorough clean often brightens dull-looking fabric; if it has truly faded, replacement covers are the better fix.
Do Sunbrella cushions get hot in the sun?
All fabrics warm up in direct sun, and darker colors absorb more heat than lighter ones. Sunbrella stays cooler and less sticky than vinyl because it breathes. For seating in full afternoon sun, choose lighter shades.
Is Sunbrella fabric breathable?
Yes. Sunbrella upholstery fabric is a woven acrylic, so air moves through it and it dries quickly after rain. That breathability is also why most Sunbrella upholstery fabric is water-repellent rather than waterproof (Sunbrella Rain is the exception).
Is it safe to use Sunbrella cushions near a fire pit?
Keep them at a safe distance. Standard Sunbrella upholstery isn't sold as flame-retardant, and acrylic can melt or burn if sparks land on it. For commercial fire codes, see flammability standards.
Will cats or dogs damage Sunbrella?
Sunbrella is stain-resistant and easy to clean after pets, but it isn't claw-proof. Tight, flat weaves such as Sunbrella Canvas snag less than loose or loopy textured weaves.
How do I fix a tear in Sunbrella fabric?
For a small tear, Sunbrella suggests a professional upholsterer or a DIY repair product such as Tear Mender (Sunbrella Help Center). For a cushion, a replacement Sunbrella cover is often the cleanest fix.
Water, mildew and weather
Are Sunbrella cushions waterproof?
Most Sunbrella upholstery fabrics are water-repellent, not waterproof: water beads up and rolls off, but heavy or long rain can soak through to the foam. Sunbrella Rain and Sunbrella marine fabrics are waterproof.
Can Sunbrella cushions be left outside in the rain?
Yes, the fabric is made to live outdoors. If cushions stay wet inside, it's the filling: standard foam and batting hold water, while water mainly enters through seams and zippers. Stand cushions on edge to drain after heavy rain and choose quick-dry foam for uncovered seating.
Can Sunbrella cushions stay outside all winter?
The fabric can handle the weather, but cushions last longer when stored for winter. Clean them, let the covers and foam dry completely, and store them somewhere dry and ventilated. Don't store them damp or sealed in plastic, as trapped moisture leads to mildew and musty smells.
Does Sunbrella get mold or mildew?
Sunbrella fibers are inherently mold and mildew resistant, but mildew can grow on dirt, pollen and debris left on the surface, or inside damp foam. Regular cleaning and drying cushions fully are the best prevention. How to remove it.
Is mildew on Sunbrella covered by the warranty?
Sunbrella's upholstery warranty includes mildew among the conditions that can make the fabric itself unserviceable. Surface mildew growing on dirt is treated as a cleaning issue and can usually be removed (see how). Sunbrella warranty.
How do I remove mold and mildew from Sunbrella cushions?
Mix 1 cup of bleach and ¼ cup of mild soap per gallon of water. Spray the whole area, let it soak for 15 minutes, clean with a sponge or very soft brush, rinse thoroughly and air dry. For severe mildew, Sunbrella says the bleach can be increased; Sunbrella Renew is its ready-made remover. Sunbrella Help Center.
Does salt water damage Sunbrella?
Sunbrella marine and shade fabrics are virtually unaffected by fresh or salt water, but dried salt leaves a residue. Rinse with fresh water regularly; for salt build-up, soak in soapy water for 15 minutes, scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse and air dry.
Can Sunbrella cushions be used by the pool?
Yes. Sunbrella tolerates chlorine well because it can be bleach-cleaned. Rinse cushions with fresh water now and then and choose Dryfast foam for poolside seating. See pool cushions for hotels and resorts.
How do I restore the water repellency on Sunbrella?
Sprinkle a few drops of water on the fabric. If they bead and roll off, the finish is fine. If water soaks in (deep or bleach cleaning wears the finish over time), clean the fabric, let it dry, then apply Sunbrella Restore™ Fabric Protector & Repellent outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Sunbrella Help Center.
Can I use Scotchgard or 303 Fabric Guard on Sunbrella?
Sunbrella recommends its own Sunbrella Restore™ (how to use it), and older Sunbrella guidance also listed 303 Fabric Guard. Other sprays aren't approved by Sunbrella, so test any product on a hidden area first and keep protectors off vinyl and zippers.
Cleaning and stain removal
How do you clean Sunbrella cushions?
Brush off loose dirt, then mix ¼ cup of mild soap, such as Dawn or Woolite, per gallon of lukewarm water. Clean with a sponge or very soft brush, let it soak in, rinse thoroughly until no soap remains and air dry. Sunbrella upholstery cleaning.
How do I clean Sunbrella cushions that don't have zippers?
Clean them in place: apply the mild soap solution with a soft brush from seam to seam (cleaning only a spot can leave water rings), let it soak in and rinse thoroughly. A wet vacuum or upholstery extractor helps pull water out evenly; then stand cushions on edge to dry.
Can you machine wash Sunbrella cushion covers?
Yes, for most Sunbrella upholstery fabrics. Remove the foam, close the zipper and wash in cold water on a delicate cycle with mild detergent; for heavy mildew on outdoor fabric, Sunbrella allows adding 1 cup of bleach. Sunbrella Rain, Horizon, Sling and shade fabrics should not be machine washed.
Can I put Sunbrella covers in the dryer?
No. Always air dry Sunbrella upholstery; dryer heat can shrink the acrylic. Sunbrella dries quickly on its own, especially in the sun.
Can I iron or steam Sunbrella?
You can iron Sunbrella upholstery on the synthetic setting after testing a hidden area. Sunbrella says not to use a steamer or the steam setting on upholstery fabric.
Can I dry clean Sunbrella?
No. Sunbrella advises against dry cleaning its upholstery fabrics. Use soap and water, the machine-wash method for removable covers, or Sunbrella's cleaning products instead.
Can you use bleach on Sunbrella?
Yes. Sunbrella is bleach-cleanable because the color is in the fiber; use it diluted (see the mix). Rinse thoroughly, protect nearby non-Sunbrella fabric and thread, and on boats avoid bleach running into a lake, river or the sea.
Can I pressure wash Sunbrella cushions?
It isn't recommended. Sunbrella's instructions call for soft brushes and a gentle rinse; high pressure can damage the weave, strip the finish and force water deep into the foam. Use a garden hose and the mild soap mix instead.
How often should I clean Sunbrella cushions?
Brush off dirt and rinse cushions regularly during the outdoor season, treat spills right away, and do a full clean before storing them for winter. Regular cleaning is the best way to prevent mildew.
What cleaners are safe on Sunbrella?
Mild soap and water, Dawn® and Resolve® are safe, as is Sunbrella's own line: Clean for everyday spills, Extract for oil (not on Horizon vinyl), Erase for leftover color, Renew for mildew and Restore for water repellency (outdoors only). Safety data sheets are published by Sunbrella: product safety data.
Is Sunbrella stain-proof?
No fabric is stain-proof. Sunbrella is highly stain-resistant and bleach-cleanable, but treat spills quickly; oil-based stains in particular are easier to remove when fresh (oil stains). Sunbrella stain guide.
How do I get oil, grease or sunscreen out of Sunbrella?
Cover the fresh stain with cornstarch for about 10 minutes to absorb the oil, scrape it off with a straight edge, then clean with dish soap solution (1 teaspoon dish soap per cup of water) and a degreaser such as Sunbrella Extract. Act fast: Sunbrella's newer finish repels oil less than older finishes.
How do I get red wine or coffee out of Sunbrella?
Blot the spill, clean with dish soap solution (1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid per cup of water), rinse well and air dry. Sunbrella uses the same method for beer, berries, cola, tea and BBQ sauce, with Sunbrella Erase for any leftover discoloration.
How do I clean pet urine, vomit or bird droppings off Sunbrella?
Remove any solids, then clean with dish soap solution mixed with white vinegar, rinse thoroughly and air dry. For pet hair, vacuum regularly.
How do I get blood out of Sunbrella?
Clean with dish soap solution mixed with hydrogen peroxide, rinse and air dry. Use Sunbrella Erase if any discoloration remains.
How do I remove tree sap from Sunbrella?
Soften the sap with a solvent such as Murphy's Oil Soap, turpentine or 100% acetone, repeating as needed, then wash with soap and water and rinse thoroughly. Test the solvent on a hidden spot first.
How do I remove ink or nail polish from Sunbrella?
Dab the stain with 100% acetone, then clean with dish soap solution and rinse well. Use Sunbrella Erase for any leftover discoloration.
How do I get candle wax off Sunbrella?
Cover the wax with a towel and press with a warm iron to lift it into the towel, then clean the area with dish soap solution and rinse.
How do I get chewing gum, crayon or charcoal off Sunbrella?
Treat the spot with isopropyl alcohol, then clean with dish soap solution and rinse. For charcoal, vacuum loose dust first.
How do I remove rust stains from Sunbrella?
Use a rust remover such as CLR, following the product directions, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and air dry.
How do I remove ketchup, mustard or chocolate from Sunbrella?
Clean with dish soap solution first. For leftover ketchup or mustard color, Sunbrella suggests a little diluted bleach or Sunbrella Erase; for chocolate, follow up with Sunbrella Extract to remove any oily residue.
How do I remove makeup or lipstick from Sunbrella?
Clean with dish soap solution, then a strong degreaser or Sunbrella Extract, and rinse thoroughly.
Health, safety and sustainability
Is Sunbrella fabric toxic?
Sunbrella upholstery fabrics are GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions, and most are tested to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, which screens for harmful substances. See also PFAS.
Is Sunbrella PFAS-free?
Glen Raven began phasing PFAS out of Sunbrella finishes in 2023 and announced that all production would be non-PFAS by the end of 2023. Sunbrella says its current fabrics are free of intentionally added PFAS; fabric made before 2024 may still have the older finish. Textile World report.
Did Sunbrella's stain resistance change after going PFAS-free?
Yes, for oil. Glen Raven says oil repellency is lower with the non-PFAS finish, while color, strength and durability are unchanged. That is why Sunbrella introduced Extract, a remover for oil-based stains (how to use it).
Is Sunbrella good for homes with kids and pets?
Yes. Sunbrella describes its fabrics as made for family-friendly spaces: spills and pet messes clean up easily and the fabric can be bleach-cleaned. Sunbrella Help Center.
Does Sunbrella protect against UV rays?
Sunbrella awning and furniture fabrics earned the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation for shade use. For cushions, the main benefit is that the UV-stable pigments help the fabric keep its color and strength in strong sun.
Is Sunbrella eco-friendly?
Sunbrella is acrylic, a synthetic fiber, but its long life keeps cushions out of landfills for longer. Solution dyeing uses less water than dyeing finished fabric, Renaissance yarns use up to 50% recycled Sunbrella fiber, and its plants divert most manufacturing waste from landfill. Sunbrella sustainability.
Can Sunbrella fabric be recycled?
Yes, through Sunbrella's Recycle My Sunbrella program, which has collected nearly one million pounds since 2010. Remove zippers, foam and hardware first. Sunbrella Horizon vinyl isn't accepted.
Sunbrella vs other fabrics
What is the difference between Sunbrella and olefin?
Both are solution-dyed, so both resist fading. Olefin (polypropylene) is usually cheaper and lighter. Sunbrella acrylic generally has a softer, more canvas-like hand, a wider color range and a 5-year fabric warranty from the maker.
What is the difference between Sunbrella and polyester outdoor fabric?
Most budget outdoor cushions use polyester that is dyed or printed after weaving, so the color sits on the surface and fades faster in sun. Sunbrella's color goes through the fiber, so it holds up much longer outdoors.
Sunbrella vs Outdura: which is better?
Both are high-quality solution-dyed acrylics with similar fade resistance and the same basic cleaning methods. Outdura offers a longer warranty on some lines, while Sunbrella has the wider range of colors, collections and specialty fabrics such as Rain and Horizon. Sailrite comparison.
Sunbrella vs Revolution fabric?
Revolution is a separate brand of olefin performance fabric, not a Sunbrella line. Sunbrella is solution-dyed acrylic with a decades-long track record outdoors and a wider range of outdoor and marine fabrics; Revolution markets itself as bleach-cleanable and PFAS-free.
Sunbrella or vinyl for boat cushions?
Sunbrella fabric is cooler, more comfortable and breathes, but needs regular rinsing and washing. Vinyl wipes clean quickly but gets hot and can trap water in the foam. Sunbrella Horizon is Sunbrella's own marine vinyl if you want a wipe-clean surface.
Can I put a Sunbrella cover over old vinyl cushions?
It isn't recommended. A vinyl layer underneath stops the cushion from drying, which encourages mildew. It is better to replace the foam and make a new Sunbrella cover.
Styling and decorating
How do I choose a Sunbrella color for outdoor cushions?
Which Sunbrella colors hide dirt and stains best?
Mid-tone solids and textured or heathered weaves, such as greys, taupes, flax and muted blues or greens, disguise dust, pollen and small marks better than bright white or very dark solids. Patterns and stripes also help hide wear on high-use seating.
Do you offer striped and patterned Sunbrella fabrics?
Yes. Alongside solids, Fabrica Kraft offers Sunbrella stripes and textured weaves for custom cushions. Availability changes by color, so check the Sunbrella cushions collection or email us for a specific pattern.
Can I mix Sunbrella solids and stripes?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to make outdoor seating look designed. Pick one dominant solid for the seat cushions, then bring in a stripe or texture on back cushions or pillows that repeats the main color, plus one accent color.
Should I choose piping or a knife edge for Sunbrella cushions?
It is a style choice. Piping (welt) outlines the cushion for a crisp, tailored, traditional look and adds about ¼ inch to the finished size; a knife edge looks cleaner and more modern. Piping is optional on Fabrica Kraft cushions but isn't available on waterproof-fabric cushions.
Can I have Sunbrella piping in a contrasting color?
Yes. Piping matches the cushion fabric by default, but a contrasting Sunbrella color, such as beige cushions with brown piping, is available on request. Email us your two colors and we can send a mock-up before you order. Piping vs knife edge.
Are all Sunbrella collections the same price?
No, price varies by collection. Classic collections such as Canvas, Spectrum and Play share the same pricing, while premium textures such as Blend Linen, Natté and Heritage cost more. The builder shows the exact price for each color before checkout.
Which Sunbrella fabrics look best indoors?
Textured, linen-look and softer weaves, such as Blend Linen, Natté and Sunbrella Interiors styles, feel and look most like indoor upholstery. They suit window seats, banquettes and mudroom benches where you want performance without an outdoor look.
What Sunbrella colors suit coastal, farmhouse and modern styles?
As a starting point: coastal spaces suit navy, white, aqua and classic stripes; modern farmhouse suits natural canvas, flax, heather grey and soft green; modern and minimalist spaces suit charcoal, black, white and bold single-color solids.
How do I style throw pillows with Sunbrella cushions?
Mix two or three sizes (for example 18, 20 and 22 inches), combine one pattern with one or two solids, and repeat a color from the seat cushions so the set feels connected. Fabrica Kraft makes custom Sunbrella throw pillows in any size, as a cover only or with microfiber fill.
Can I coordinate Sunbrella cushions with outdoor curtains?
Yes. Fabrica Kraft also makes custom outdoor curtains, so you can plan cushions, pillows and curtains together and compare every color with swatches in one order.
Can I see how a Sunbrella color will look on my seat before ordering?
The bench and window seat builder includes a room preview that changes color as you pick fabrics. Screens show colors slightly differently, so confirm with a swatch.

Can I buy Sunbrella cushion covers only?
Yes. Every builder offers a cover-only option, and you can also buy foam only. See Sunbrella replacement cushion covers and custom foam. Covers are measured seam to seam.
Do you make Sunbrella replacement cushions for brand-name patio furniture?
Yes, for brands such as POLYWOOD, Frontgate, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Hampton Bay and Lloyd Flanders. See all replacement cushions.
Can you match my existing Sunbrella cushion color?
Usually, yes. Check the tag on your current cushion for the Sunbrella fabric name or style number, or send us a photo. Production runs (dye lots) can vary slightly, so compare with a swatch before ordering, and order all pieces for one set together.
Can I send my own Sunbrella fabric (COM)?
Yes, for homeowners and businesses. Email care@fabricakraft.com with your cushion sizes first so we can confirm exactly how many yards you need. Our fabric warranty doesn't cover customer-supplied material, and these projects can take extra lead time.
Measuring, setup and fit
Should I measure my furniture or my old Sunbrella cushion?
Either works. If the old cushion fits well, measure it seam to seam. If you are measuring the furniture, measure edge to edge and take off about ¼ inch so the new cushion fits without bulging. You'll approve a spec sheet before we cut. Follow our measuring guide.
Can you size my Sunbrella cushions from my furniture brand and model?
We still need your own measurements. Product listings usually give the overall furniture size, not the cushion size, and seat dimensions vary between production runs.
Which measurement is width and which is depth?
For a rectangular cushion it doesn't really matter: we place the zipper along the back of the longer side unless you ask otherwise. For chaise, L-shaped and other shapes, follow the labels in the builder.
My seat measures between two sizes. Should I round up or down?
Round down slightly. For example, for a 24½-inch space, a 24¼- to 24-inch cushion fits neatly without bulging. Finished cushions are made within ½ inch of your approved spec, so a snug size is safer than a larger one.
What thickness should my Sunbrella seat and back cushions be?
Most benches, chairs and window seats use 3 to 5 inches; deep seating seats are often 5 to 6 inches, with 3- to 5-inch backs. Cushions are made in whole-inch thicknesses up to 8 inches in the builder; for thicker, email operation@fabricakraft.com.
How should I split a long bench cushion?
Foam is cut in one piece up to 92 inches. For longer benches we can make one cover with several foam inserts, so it looks like one cushion, or several separate cushions that are easier to lift and wash. Tell us the full length and whether the bench is straight or curved.
How do I send a template for a curved or odd-shaped cushion?
Trace the seat on paper or send your old cover. Email us first so we can confirm the price, then place the order, write your order number on the package and share the tracking number. Templates add some production time, which we confirm with your quote.
Do seat and back cushions come as a set?
Each seat and back cushion is its own piece, so add the number of seats and backs you need. Deep seating builders let you configure matching seat and back sets together.
How do I put the foam into my Sunbrella cushion cover?
Unzip the cover fully, fold or taper the foam slightly and slide it in, working the front corners in first. Sliding the foam inside a thin plastic bag makes this easier; pull the bag out once the foam is in place. Line up the seams with the foam edges and zip it closed.
Why does my new Sunbrella cushion look wrinkled or flat?
Vacuum-packed foam needs 12 to 18 hours to recover fully, so unpack it, lay it flat and let it expand before inserting it. Packing creases in the cover relax after a few days of use, or iron the cover on the synthetic setting without steam.
What is the white wrap around the foam?
It is a Dacron® polyester fiber wrap. It gives the cushion a softer, rounded, fuller look and helps the cover fit snugly. It compresses once the foam is inside the cover, so leave it on.
Can I make my cushions softer without replacing them?
We don't add toppers to existing foam, but a new Dacron® wrap, or a double wrap, gives a softer, fuller look. If your foam has gone flat, replace the foam inside your Sunbrella cover (foam options).
How do I attach Sunbrella cushion ties?
Ties are sewn in matching Sunbrella fabric at the positions you choose, usually the two back corners. Wrap them around a spindle, slat or frame member and tie a bow or square knot; pick positions that line up with your furniture frame when you order.
Can I use Velcro instead of ties?
Yes, on request. We sew a Velcro strip to the underside of the cushion, and you attach the matching strip to the seat; add a note at checkout or email us. We don't add non-slip backing, because it can't be machine washed and voids the warranty. Using ties.
Foam and construction
What foam is best inside Sunbrella cushions?
For outdoor cushions that get rained on, use reticulated quick-dry foam such as Dryfast, which lets water drain straight through. For covered porches and indoor seating, a high-density polyurethane seat foam gives more support and comfort.
What foam does Fabrica Kraft use, and how firm is it?
Choose Lux foam (our standard CertiPUR-US® certified seat foam: firm, 1.8 lb/ft³, 50 lb ILD), Dryfast reticulated foam for outdoor and marine use, or Super Soft foam for back cushions only. Any foam can get a Dacron® wrap for a softer, fuller look. Custom foam · CertiPUR-US.
Are Sunbrella cushion covers removable?
Yes. Every Fabrica Kraft Sunbrella cover has a YKK zipper, usually along the longest side. Chaise cushions have the zipper on the hinged side, bench cushions can have an edge-to-edge zipper, and covers over 52 inches get a wrap-around zipper for easier removal.
Sewing and DIY with Sunbrella
Can I sew Sunbrella on a home sewing machine?
Yes. Sunbrella says all its fabrics can be sewn on a standard sewing machine. A walking foot helps feed thick layers evenly, and very heavy fabrics or many layers may need a heavy-duty machine. Sunbrella Help Center.
What needle should I use for Sunbrella?
Sunbrella recommends a size 16 to 18 needle with a rounded point. As a guide, use 90/14 for lighter upholstery fabrics, 100/16 for medium weights and 110/18 for heavy canvas-style fabrics. Sunbrella Help Center.
What thread should I use to sew Sunbrella cushions?
Sunbrella recommends V-69 UV-resistant polyester or UV nylon for upholstery: solution-dyed bonded polyester outdoors and nylon indoors, with the same thread in the needle and bobbin. Sunbrella Help Center.
Is PTFE thread worth it for Sunbrella?
PTFE thread (such as Gore Tenara) is far more UV-resistant than polyester and can outlast the fabric, but costs several times more. It is most worthwhile for boat canvas and cushions in strong, year-round sun; polyester is usually fine for cushions that are stored or shaded.
What stitch length and seam allowance should I use?
Sunbrella recommends the longest stitch your machine allows, about 4 mm on home machines or 8 to 10 mm on industrial ones, and roughly 7 stitches per inch for upholstery. Use at least a ½-inch seam allowance.
How do I cut Sunbrella without fraying?
Scissors, a rotary cutter or pinking shears all work; slight fraying is normal and disappears once edges are sewn. A hot knife seals the edge but can leave it sharp. Avoid stack-cutting patterned fabric.
Which zipper is best for outdoor Sunbrella cushions?
Use a UV-stable molded-plastic zipper (such as YKK Vislon, size #5 for cushions); light coil zippers are less UV-resistant and metal zippers corrode outdoors. Place it along the back boxing so the cushion can still be flipped. Sailrite zipper guide.

Many solid Sunbrella fabrics look nearly the same on both sides because they are solution-dyed. Textured, jacquard and patterned styles usually have a clear face side, so check before cutting.
