Fire-safety fabrics for commercial cushions and curtains in the UK

UK contract projects usually need upholstery and curtain fabrics with documented fire performance. This guide explains the standards specifiers most often ask for, and how we confirm fabric documentation before you order.

This is general information, not compliance advice. Your fire risk assessor or specifier sets the requirement for each project.

Buyer’s guide

Understanding the standards

BS 7176 and BS 5852 (seating)

BS 7176 sets the fire performance of upholstered seating for non-domestic use, by hazard level. It uses BS 5852 ignition tests: low-hazard settings usually need cigarette and match tests, medium-hazard settings such as hotels and pubs usually also need Crib 5.

BS 5867 (curtains)

BS 5867 Part 2 covers curtains and drapes. Type B is commonly specified for hotels and public buildings.

What to send us

  • The standard and hazard level in your specification.
  • The areas each fabric is for.
  • Preferred colours or ranges.

We'll confirm suitable fabrics and documentation before you order.

How it works

From your brief to your door

  1. 01

    Send your brief

Sizes, quantities, fabric ideas and your deadline. Photos, drawings or old covers all work. We reply the same day during business hours.

  2. 02

    Approve the spec and quote

You get a spec sheet with every dimension and option, plus a project quote. Nothing is cut until you sign off. Order swatches if you'd like to see the fabric first.

  3. 03

    We make it

A deposit starts production, which takes 2–3 weeks for standard shapes, 5–6 weeks for custom shapes made from your template, and 8–12 weeks for Ultraleather and Gabriel. Rush production is available for standard shapes. If anything slips, you hear from us before the date, not after.

  4. 04

    Delivered, tracked and insured

The balance is due before dispatch. Every delivery is tracked and insured. Covers and foam may arrive separately, and foam needs 12–18 hours to expand once unpacked.
