Waterproof Garden Cushions: What Actually Survives British Rain

Waterproof or water-resistant? How to choose garden cushion fabric and foam that cope with British rain, and how to keep them dry and mould-free.

Quick answer: Most "waterproof" garden cushions are really water-resistant. For seats that stay out in the rain, pair a fabric that sheds water, such as Sunbrella, with quick-drain open-cell foam so any water that gets in runs straight out. If the cushion must keep water out completely, choose Sunbrella's waterproof range or marine vinyl.

British gardens see rain in every season, so the question is less "will it get wet?" and more "how fast does it dry?". Here is how to pick cushions that stay comfortable and fresh from spring to autumn.

Water-resistant vs waterproof

  • Water-resistant fabric makes rain bead and roll off. In a heavy downpour some water can still soak through the seams. Most Sunbrella fabrics are in this group, and they resist mould and fading too.
  • Waterproof fabric stops water passing through at all. Our Sunbrella waterproof cushions and marine vinyl are in this group.

For a covered patio or garden room, water-resistant fabric is usually all you need. For a bench on an open lawn, waterproof fabric or quick-drain foam is the safer choice.

The foam matters as much as the fabric

Ordinary foam acts like a sponge. Once it is wet it stays wet, and that is when mould starts. Quick-drain open-cell foam lets water pass straight through and dries in hours, not days. It is the best choice for cushions that live outside. For covered seats, our high density foam gives a firmer, more supportive sit. Foam for UK orders is made and cut in the UK by our partner GB Foam Direct.

Keeping cushions dry and mould-free

  • Stand cushions on their edge after rain so water drains out.
  • Bring them in or cover them during long wet spells.
  • Store them somewhere dry and ventilated over winter, not sealed in plastic.
  • Brush off leaves and dirt often; mould feeds on what sits on the fabric.
  • Sunbrella covers can go in the washing machine on a gentle cycle; air dry them.

Which combination should I choose?

  • Covered patio or veranda: Sunbrella fabric with high density foam.
  • Open garden bench or dining chairs: Sunbrella with quick-drain foam.
  • Poolside, hot tub or boat: marine vinyl or Sunbrella waterproof with quick-drain foam.

Every cushion is made to your measurements within ±1.3 cm, with zipped covers you can remove. Start with garden furniture cushions or browse Sunbrella cushions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave garden cushions out in the rain?

You can with the right build: a water-resistant or waterproof fabric plus quick-drain foam. Stand them on edge after heavy rain so they dry faster.

Why do my garden cushions go mouldy?

Mould grows when foam stays damp and dirt sits on the fabric. Quick-drain foam, regular brushing and dry, ventilated storage prevent most of it.

Is Sunbrella waterproof?

Most Sunbrella fabric is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Sunbrella's waterproof range and marine collections keep water out completely.

How long do made-to-measure cushions take?
