Aged Care and Childcare Seating Cushions: A Practical Guide
A practical guide to choosing, cleaning and ordering made-to-measure seating cushions for aged care homes and early learning centres in Australia.
On this page
Quick answer: Seating cushions for aged care and childcare should be firm enough to support people getting in and out of a seat, covered in a wipe-clean fabric such as marine vinyl, and fitted with zipped removable covers for deeper cleaning. Measure every chair and bench individually, ask your certifier about fire requirements early, and order spare covers so cleaning never leaves a seat out of use.
Aged care homes and early learning centres have something in common: seating gets used constantly, spills are part of daily life, and cleaning has to be fast and thorough. The people using the seats also need different things from a cushion than a café guest does. Our aged care cushions and curtains are made to measure for dining chairs, lounge seating, window seats and outdoor courtyards, with no minimum order.
This guide is for facility managers, operations leads, centre directors and designers. It covers firmness and seat height, fabric, cleaning routines, fire testing, budgeting and how a commercial order works. It doesn't replace advice from your clinical, occupational therapy or infection-control team, who know your residents and children best.
Aged care seating: what matters
Firmness and seat height
Many older people find it hard to rise from a low, soft seat. A firmer cushion gives a stable base to push up from, and keeping the cushion to a sensible thickness avoids raising the seat too high for feet to rest flat. Before ordering, check the finished seat height with your care team. Our foam is Australian-made by Premier Group in Sydney, with commercial high-resilience grades that hold their shape under all-day use.
Fabric
- Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl: wipes clean, suits dining rooms and high-use lounge chairs. See our Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl cushions.
- Warwick upholstery: Warwick, an Australian fabric house, offers softer-looking fabrics for lounges and family rooms that still feel residential rather than clinical.
- Sunbrella: fade and mould resistant for outdoor courtyards and sunrooms. Most is water-repellent rather than waterproof.
Where cushions go
- Dining chair seat pads with ties so they stay put as chairs are moved.
- Lounge and window seat cushions in common areas.
- Courtyard and garden bench cushions with quick-dry outdoor foam.
Childcare seating: what matters
Early learning centres use cushions for reading corners, window seats, benches and staff areas. Children climb, spill, paint and nap, so durability and cleaning come first.
- Wipe-clean fabric: marine vinyl handles paint, food and drink.
- Removable zipped covers: make deeper washing straightforward.
- Thinner, firm cushions: for low benches and reading nooks, keeping seat height suitable for small children.
- Calm colours: many centres prefer muted tones that suit the room rather than bright primaries.

Outdoor courtyards and play areas
Gardens and courtyards give residents and children fresh air, and a comfortable bench encourages them to use it. Outdoor cushions need solution-dyed fabric that resists fading and mould, with outdoor reticulated foam that drains and dries quickly after rain or a hose-down. Ties keep cushions in place on windy days. Store them under cover overnight or in wet weather if you can, and stand them on edge to drain if they get caught in a shower.
A general cleaning routine
Follow your organisation's own infection-control procedures. As a general starting point:
- After each use or meal: wipe vinyl with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry.
- Daily: check seams, zips and ties. Clean any spills on upholstery straight away.
- Weekly: vacuum upholstery and seams.
- As needed: remove zipped covers for deeper cleaning in line with the fabric maker's care guide. Ask us for the care guide for your chosen fabric before you order, so it fits your cleaning products and routine.
Spare covers mean a soiled cover can be swapped immediately and the seat stays in use while the other is cleaned. Covers can be ordered without foam.
Fire testing
Aged care and childcare buildings often have specific fire requirements for furnishings. Warwick fabrics are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3, with ranges like Ronan, Dion, Beachcomber and Lustrell Charisma scoring 0 for spread of flame, and fire-retardant foam grades are available from Premier. We supply the maker's test reports with the quote or spec sheet and match materials to the requirement you give us. We don't certify finished installations: your certifier, building surveyor or fire authority has the final say. Our fire safety fabrics page has more detail.
Measuring a facility
- Make a list of rooms and the seating in each.
- Measure each seat type in millimetres: width at front and back, depth, and any shaping.
- Measure benches and window seats individually.
- Note tie positions on chairs.
- Photograph each seat type.
We make within ±13 mm of the ordered size, with a free remake if we miss. You can configure simple shapes in our custom seat cushions collection.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing soft, deep cushions that make standing up harder.
- Ordering fabric before checking it works with your cleaning products.
- Leaving fire requirements until after ordering.
- Skipping ties on dining chairs.
- Ordering no spare covers.
Approvals and sign-off
Care and education projects often need sign-off from several people: facility manager, clinical or educational lead, finance and sometimes a board. The spec sheet we prepare shows every cushion's size, shape, fabric and foam, so it can be circulated and approved in one go before production starts.
Budgeting
Group seating by type and room, and ask for pricing per group so you can phase work across wings or rooms. Replacing covers only, where foam is still in good shape, can stretch the budget. Check whether figures are ex or inc GST before comparing quotes.
How a commercial order works
Send your seating list, measurements, photos and any fire or cleaning requirements through our bulk cushion enquiry form, or email operation@fabricakraft.com. We help shortlist fabrics and send swatches (paid, with the cost credited back on your order), then prepare a spec sheet with drawings. Nothing is cut until you approve it.
Standard shapes take 2 to 3 weeks; custom shapes from your template take 5 to 6 weeks. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost, and shipping within Australia is free. Designers working on care and education projects can join our designer trade program, with 10%, 15% and 20% tiers based on rolling 12-month spend. Get started on our aged care cushions page.
