Everything café owners and designers need to plan made-to-measure booth seating and chair seat pads, from measuring in mm to fabric, cleaning and ordering.

Quick answer: For café booth seating and seat pads, measure every seat in millimetres, choose a firm commercial foam that won't flatten under all-day use, and pick a fabric your staff can clean in seconds. Ties keep chair pads in place, zipped covers make cleaning easy, and ordering a few spares keeps the floor looking fresh.

Café furniture works hard. A popular table can turn over a dozen times before lunch, and every guest sits, shifts, spills and stands up again. Hard timber chairs and bare booths look clean in photos, but customers notice when they're uncomfortable, and they don't stay for a second coffee. Our café and restaurant cushions are made to measure for booths, chairs, stools and benches, with no minimum order.

This guide is for café owners, operations managers and designers planning a fit-out or a refresh. It covers what to measure, which foam and fabric suit a café, how to keep seating clean, and how a commercial order runs.

Booth seating versus seat pads

Most cafés mix two types of seating, and they need different approaches.

  • Booth seating: fixed seats, often with a back. The cushion is a thicker seat block, sometimes with a separate back cushion. It sits on a platform, so it doesn't need ties.
  • Seat pads: thinner cushions for loose dining chairs, stools and benches. They need ties or Velcro to stay put as chairs are moved, stacked and wiped down.

Both are made from your exact measurements, so a booth in a tight corner or a chair with a shaped seat gets a cushion that fits properly.

Measuring a whole café

Walk the floor with a tape measure, a notepad and your phone camera. Number every seat on a simple plan.

  1. Chairs: measure seat width at the front and back, and depth from front edge to backrest. Note where ties will go around the back legs or spindles.
  2. Stools: measure the seat diameter or width and depth. Round stools need a round pattern.
  3. Booths: measure length, depth and back height for each run separately. Joinery often varies by 10 mm or more.
  4. Odd shapes: make a cardboard template for curved or angled seats.
  5. Photos: take one straight-on photo and one side photo of each seating type.

We make every cushion within ±13 mm of the size ordered. If we miss that, we remake it free.

Foam that lasts in a café

Seat pads on dining chairs are usually thin, so the foam has to be dense enough not to bottom out. Booth seats can be thicker but need to stay firm at the front edge, where most people sit first.

  • Commercial high-resilience foam: our Australian-made foam from Premier Group in Sydney comes in grades built for heavy use.
  • Outdoor reticulated foam: for footpath and courtyard tables. It drains and dries quickly and resists mould.
  • Fire-retardant grades: available where the project requires them.

For a deeper look at choosing thickness, see our seat cushion foam thickness guide.

Fabric for café furniture

Coffee, milk, sauce and sunscreen all end up on café seating. Choose fabric for cleaning first and looks second, then find the best looking option in that group.

  • Marine vinyl: Sunbrella Horizon wipes clean between customers and suits counter stools and busy booths.
  • Warwick upholstery: Warwick, an Australian fabric house, offers hardwearing indoor and outdoor ranges in a huge colour selection. Browse our Warwick upholstery cushions.
  • Sunbrella upholstery: solution-dyed and fade resistant, a good fit for sunny window seats and alfresco areas. Most Sunbrella is water-repellent, not waterproof.

Order swatches and look at them in your café at different times of day. Swatches are paid, and the cost is credited back via a one-time code on your order.

Fire testing

If your landlord, certifier or council asks about fire performance, tell us early. Warwick fabrics are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3, with ranges like Lustrell Charisma, Ronan, Dion and Beachcomber scoring 0 for spread of flame. We attach the maker's test report for your chosen fabric to the quote or spec sheet and match fabric and foam to the stated requirement. The final say on any installation sits with your certifier or fire authority. More detail is on our fire safety fabrics page.

A simple cleaning routine

  • Between customers: wipe vinyl with a damp cloth. Brush crumbs off upholstery.
  • End of day: wipe with mild soapy water, then dry. Check for loose ties.
  • Weekly: vacuum seams and booth joins. Rotate seat pads so wear is even.
  • As needed: unzip upholstery covers for a deeper clean, following the care instructions for that fabric.

Budgeting a café seating refresh

Cost depends on the number and size of cushions, fabric choice, foam grade and shape. Plan around a few practical points:

  • Ask for pricing per seat type so you can phase the work: booths first, then chairs.
  • Covers can be ordered without foam if your existing foam is still in good condition.
  • Add spare covers for the most used seats, so a stained cover can be swapped the same day.
  • Allow for the lead time in your plan, especially if the refresh has to land before a busy season or a reopening.
  • Check whether your budget figures are ex or inc GST before comparing quotes.

Checklist before you order

  • Every seat numbered and measured in mm.
  • Photos of each seating type.
  • Fabric shortlist with swatches checked on site.
  • Fire testing requirements confirmed with your certifier.
  • Indoor and outdoor seats separated on the plan.
  • Installation date booked around a quiet day.
