Fire-Retardant Fabric for Commercial Projects in Australia

A plain-words guide to AS/NZS 1530.3, fire-retardant fabric and foam, and what to ask your certifier before ordering commercial cushions in Australia.

Quick answer: In Australia, upholstery fabric for commercial projects is commonly assessed against AS/NZS 1530.3, which reports four indices: ignitability, spread of flame, heat evolved and smoke developed. Ask your certifier or building surveyor which results the project needs, then choose fabrics whose maker's test reports meet them. Several Warwick ranges score 0 out of 10 for spread of flame, and fire-retardant foam grades are available from Premier.

Fire requirements are one of the most common reasons commercial cushion orders stall. A fit-out is nearly finished, the certifier asks for test data, and nobody has it. The fix is simple: understand what's being asked for, gather the reports early and make sure the fabric and foam match. Our fire safety fabrics page for Australia lists the test data we hold, and this guide explains what it means in plain words.

This article is for designers, builders, facility managers and venue owners. It isn't legal or regulatory advice. The requirements for your building are set by the applicable codes and confirmed by your certifier, building surveyor or fire authority.

AS/NZS 1530.3 in plain words

AS/NZS 1530.3 is a fire test for materials. A sample is exposed to radiant heat and a small flame, and the test reports four indices. In each, a lower number means better fire performance.

Index What it measures Scale
Ignitability How easily the material catches fire 0 to 20
Spread of flame How quickly flame travels across the surface 0 to 10
Heat evolved How much heat the material gives off as it burns 0 to 10
Smoke developed How much smoke it produces 0 to 10

Spread of flame is often the figure a certifier looks at first for upholstery in public spaces, but they may ask about all four. A fabric that scores 0 for spread of flame did not spread flame across its surface in the test.

Some projects also reference other standards, such as AS/NZS 3837. If your specification names a different standard, tell us at quote stage and we'll check what data is available for the fabrics you're considering.

Warwick fabrics with strong results

Warwick, an Australian fabric house, tests its fabrics to AS/NZS 1530.3. Ranges including Ronan, Dion, Beachcomber and Lustrell Charisma score 0 out of 10 for spread of flame. That makes them a practical starting point for cafés, clubs, hotels, aged care and education projects where fire data is needed.

Lustrell Charisma is a popular choice because it combines fire test results with a broad colour range. Browse our Warwick Lustrell Charisma cushions, or see colour ideas for Lustrell Charisma for inspiration.

Other fabrics

  • Sunbrella upholstery fabrics: tested by the maker to Cal TB 117-2013, NFPA 260 and UFAC Class I, confirmed per pattern. These are US standards, so check with your certifier whether they accept them for your project.
  • Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl: tested to Cal TB 117-2013, FMVSS 302 and UFAC Class I.
  • Ultraleather by Ultrafabrics: tested to Cal TB 117, NFPA 260, UFAC, FMVSS 302 and ASTM E84 adhered Class A.
  • Gabriel: results vary by range, and test data is sent with the quote.

Fire-retardant foam

The fabric is only part of the cushion. Our foam is Australian-made by Premier Group in Sydney, a 100% Australian-owned company, and fire-retardant grades are available for projects that need them. If your specification covers the filling as well as the cover, tell us so we can quote the right grade and supply its documentation alongside the fabric report.

What to ask your certifier or building surveyor

  1. Which standard applies to loose and fixed upholstery in this building or area?
  2. Which indices matter, and what results are needed for each?
  3. Does the requirement apply to the fabric only, or to the foam as well?
  4. Will you accept the fabric maker's test report, or do you need anything else?
  5. Are there different requirements for exits, corridors or sleeping areas?

Get the answers in writing and send them with your enquiry. It saves time on both sides.

What we supply, and what we don't

For every fabric we offer, the maker's test report is available on request, and we attach it to your quote or spec sheet. We match fabric and foam to the requirement you give us. We don't certify finished installations, and we don't make claims about the finished cushion beyond the materials' test results. Your certifier, building surveyor or fire authority has the final say on what's installed.

Plan fire data into the program

The easiest projects are the ones where fire requirements are settled before fabric is chosen. If a designer falls in love with a fabric that has no suitable test data, the choice has to be reopened late, which costs time. Shortlist only fabrics with the right reports, show the client colours from within that group, and keep a copy of each report with the spec sheet. When a refurbishment happens years later, the venue will know exactly what was installed and can reorder the same fabric with its data already on file.

Checklist for a fire-sensitive project

  • Requirement confirmed in writing with the certifier.
  • Fabric shortlist limited to ranges with suitable test reports.
  • Fire-retardant foam grade requested if the filling is in scope.
  • Test reports attached to the spec sheet before approval.
  • Reports filed with your project documentation for handover.
  • Customer-supplied fabric checked for its own test data before it's sent to us.

Ordering for a business

Start with our bulk cushion enquiry form, or email operation@fabricakraft.com with your measurements, quantities and fire requirement. We'll shortlist fabrics, send swatches (paid, with the cost credited back on your order) and prepare a spec sheet with drawings and test reports. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

Standard shapes take 2 to 3 weeks and custom shapes from a template take 5 to 6 weeks. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost, and shipping within Australia is free. For the full range of venue services, see our commercial cushions and curtains page. Designers and specifiers can join our trade program for designers, with 10%, 15% and 20% tiers based on rolling 12-month spend. For test data on specific fabrics, visit our fire safety fabrics page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good spread of flame index?

Lower is better, on a scale of 0 to 10. Several Warwick ranges, including Lustrell Charisma, Ronan, Dion and Beachcomber, score 0. Your certifier will confirm what result your project needs.

Is fire-retardant fabric enough on its own?

Not always. Some projects also specify the foam. Fire-retardant foam grades from Premier are available, so ask your certifier whether the filling is in scope.

Can you send test reports before I order?

Yes. The maker's test report for any fabric we offer is available on request and is attached to your quote or spec sheet.

Can I use my own fabric on a fire-sensitive project?

You can supply your own fabric after confirming quantities with us, but you'll need its test data from the supplier. Our fabric warranty doesn't cover customer-supplied fabric.

Do you certify the finished cushions?

No. We supply the maker's reports and match materials to your requirement. The certifier or fire authority makes the final decision.
