Resort and Hotel Pool Cushions in Australia: A Buyer's Guide
A practical guide for Australian hotels and resorts on choosing, measuring, cleaning and ordering made-to-measure sun lounge, daybed and cabana cushions.
On this page
Quick answer: Resort and hotel pool cushions in Australia need solution-dyed fabric that resists fading under strong UV, quick-drying reticulated foam that drains after rain and swimmers, and zipped covers that come off for washing. Size every sun lounge, daybed and cabana individually, and order spare covers so housekeeping can rotate them through the season.
The pool deck is often the first thing guests photograph and the last place they want to see a faded, soggy cushion. Australian sun is harsh on outdoor fabric, and pool areas add chlorine, salt, sunscreen and wet towels to the mix. Our hotel and resort cushions are made to measure for sun lounges, daybeds, cabanas and poolside lounges, with no minimum order, whether you run a boutique motel pool or a large resort with several decks.
Below we cover what resort managers, facilities teams and designers should plan for: fabric, foam, measuring, towel use, cleaning, storage, brand colour standards and the commercial order process.
What makes pool cushions fail
- UV fade: fabrics dyed on the surface lose colour quickly in full sun.
- Trapped water: standard foam soaks up rain and pool water, stays damp and grows mould.
- Sunscreen and oils: these stain light fabrics and break down cheaper coatings.
- Poor fit: cushions that slide or overhang the frame wear unevenly and look untidy.
Each of these has a practical fix, and most come down to choosing the right materials at the start.
Fabric for sun lounges and daybeds
Sunbrella is the usual choice for resort pool decks. It's solution-dyed, so the colour runs right through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface, which helps it resist fading and mould. Most Sunbrella upholstery is water-repellent rather than waterproof: it sheds splashes and light rain, and the cushion drains through quick-dry foam. Where a fully waterproof fabric is needed, Sunbrella's waterproof range and marine collections are the options to look at.
Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl suits swim-up bars and wet-edge seating where cushions are constantly splashed. It wipes clean in seconds.
Warwick, an Australian fabric house, also has outdoor ranges in colours suited to coastal and tropical properties. Our guide to Sunbrella vs Warwick fabrics in Australia compares the two.
Foam that dries fast
For pool furniture, we recommend outdoor reticulated foam. It has an open structure that lets water run straight through, so cushions dry quickly after rain or a wet swimmer, and it resists mould. Our foam is Australian-made by Premier Group in Sydney. Fire-retardant grades are available where a project calls for them.
Measuring sun lounges, daybeds and cabanas
- Sun lounges: measure the full length and width, then the length of the back section and the hinge point. Decide between a one-piece cushion with a sewn hinge or separate back and seat pieces.
- Daybeds: measure the platform inside any frame or lip, and note rounded corners. Many daybeds also take back cushions and scatter cushions.
- Cabanas: measure every seat, back and platform separately. Cabanas are often built on site, so sizes vary.
- Ties: note where ties can be fixed so cushions don't lift in the wind.
Measure in millimetres and label each frame. We make within ±13 mm of the ordered size, with a free remake if we miss. For more on daybed sizing, browse our daybed cushions collection.
Towels, sunscreen and cleaning
Encouraging guests to lay a towel down protects cushions from sunscreen and oil. Beyond that, a simple routine keeps a pool deck looking cared for:
- Daily: brush off leaves and sand, wipe vinyl, stand cushions on edge after rain to drain.
- Weekly: spot clean sunscreen marks with mild soap and lukewarm water, then rinse well.
- Monthly or as needed: unzip Sunbrella covers and machine wash according to the care guide.
- Mould: treat spots early. Our guide on how to remove mould from outdoor cushions explains the steps.
Spare covers and seasonal storage
A set of spare covers lets housekeeping swap a stained or wet cover straight away and wash the other without taking a lounge out of service. Covers can be ordered without foam, so spares are a cost-effective addition. In cyclone season or before a big storm, store cushions indoors, dry and off the floor. In southern states, store them through the coldest months if the pool deck is closed.
Brand colour standards
Many hotel groups have set colours for their outdoor areas. Send us your brand reference and we'll suggest close matches from more than 5,000 colours across our fabric partners. Approve the swatch in daylight on the deck itself before ordering.
Budgeting and phasing
Pool cushions are easier to budget when you break the deck into groups: sun lounges, daybeds, cabanas and any lounge seating. Ask for pricing per group so you can phase the work, for example replacing the most visible front-row lounges before peak season and the rest after. Where frames are being kept and the foam is still sound, replacement covers alone can stretch the budget further. Check whether figures are ex or inc GST before comparing quotes.
Fire testing for pool areas
Some resort projects need fabrics with fire test data, especially in covered cabanas and enclosed pool rooms. Warwick fabrics are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3, and Sunbrella upholstery fabrics have their own maker's test results. We supply the reports with your quote and match materials to the requirement you give us. Your certifier or fire authority has the final say. See our fire safety fabrics page for detail.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using indoor foam on outdoor lounges.
- Choosing very pale fabric for heavy sunscreen areas.
- Measuring one lounge and assuming all are identical.
- Skipping ties on exposed decks.
- Ordering no spares, so one stained cover takes a lounge out of service.
How a commercial order works
Send your counts, measurements and photos through our bulk cushion enquiry form or email operation@fabricakraft.com. We shortlist fabric, send swatches (the cost is credited back on your order), and prepare a spec sheet with drawings for approval before anything is cut. Standard shapes take 2 to 3 weeks; custom shapes from your template take 5 to 6 weeks. Rush production and express shipping are available at extra cost, and shipping within Australia is free.
Designers and procurement teams working across several properties can join our designer trade program, with 10%, 15% and 20% tiers based on rolling 12-month spend. To get started, visit our resort and hotel cushion page.
Frequently asked questions
Are Sunbrella pool cushions waterproof?
Most Sunbrella upholstery is water-repellent, not waterproof. Paired with quick-dry foam, it drains and dries quickly. Sunbrella's waterproof range and marine vinyl are options where full waterproofing is needed.
How long do resort cushions last?
It depends on use and care. Fabric carries a 5-year warranty from the fabric partner, workmanship 2 years, and foam warranty depends on the grade.
Can you supply replacement covers only?
Yes. Covers can be ordered without foam, and foam can be ordered on its own.
Do you deliver to regional and island resorts?
We ship free within Australia. Tell us about access or freight restrictions when you request a quote.
Is there a minimum order?
No. You can order a single sun lounge cushion or a full pool deck.
