Quick summary

For a busy family patio, choose a powder-coated aluminum or teak frame, solution-dyed cushion fabric such as Sunbrella with zippered, washable covers, and quick-dry foam if the sofa stays out in the rain. A mid-tone color hides dirt, a seat depth of 24″ to 30″ suits both lounging and sitting up, and modular pieces are easier to move, clean and rearrange.

1. Pick a frame that shrugs off weather

Frame Pros Cons
Powder-coated aluminum Rust-free, light, low maintenance Can blow around in high wind if very light
Teak Strong, weathers to silver, lasts decades Higher price; oil it if you want to keep the honey color
All-weather resin wicker Comfortable, classic look Cheap wicker cracks and unravels; check the frame underneath
Steel or wrought iron Heavy and stable Can rust where the coating chips

2. Choose cushions you can clean

  • Fabric: solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella resists fading, mold and mildew and can be cleaned with soap and water or diluted bleach. Printed polyester is cheaper but fades sooner.
  • Zippers: removable covers you can machine wash are a must with kids and pets.
  • Color: oatmeal, sand, mid-gray and navy hide dirt better than white. See cushion and frame color combinations.

3. Get the foam right

Seat cushions on an outdoor sofa are usually 5″ to 6″ thick. If the sofa is uncovered, choose open-cell Dryfast foam, which lets rain drain straight through and dries quickly. Under a covered porch, high-density foam with a Dacron wrap feels softer. See our cushion size and foam guide.

4. Size it for how you live

  • Seat depth: 24″ to 30″ is comfortable for most adults; deeper seats suit lounging but need back pillows for shorter family members.
  • Seat height: around 16″ to 18″ with the cushion makes it easy for kids and older relatives to get up.
  • Space: leave about 3 feet of walkway around the sofa and 14″ to 18″ between the sofa and a coffee table.
  • Modular vs fixed: modular sections move for parties, fit awkward corners and are easier to replace one at a time.

5. Plan for wear

  • Stand cushions on edge after heavy rain so they drain.
  • Use a breathable furniture cover in the off-season, or store cushions dry.
  • Keep a spare set of covers so one set can be washed while the other is in use.
  • When the frame is still good but the cushions are tired, replace just the cushions or covers instead of the whole sofa.

FAQ

What is the most durable outdoor sofa material?

Powder-coated aluminum and teak frames last longest with little care. For cushions, solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella is the most durable common fabric.

Can outdoor sofa cushions stay out in the rain?

Sunbrella fabric with Dryfast foam can handle rain and dries quickly. Standard foam holds water, so bring those cushions in or cover them.

What color outdoor sofa is best for kids and pets?

Mid-tone neutrals such as oatmeal, sand or gray hide dirt and fur better than white or very dark colors.

Can I replace just the cushions?

Yes. We make replacement outdoor sofa cushions to your exact size, as complete cushions, covers only or foam only.
