Porch Curtains
A porch gets the hardest light of the day: low morning or evening sun straight under the roof. Curtains between the columns cut that glare, give you privacy from the street and soften a screened porch so it feels finished.
Ideas by porch type
- Covered front porch: one panel at each column, tied back most of the time and drawn for evening sun or privacy.
- Screened porch: hang panels inside the screen on a rod across each bay. Sunbrella sheers soften the screen and keep the breeze.
- Sleeping porch: blackout-lined solids keep early light out.
- Sunroom or three-season room: lighter solids or sheers that still look good from inside.
Measuring a porch for curtains
- Measure each opening between columns separately; porches are rarely evenly spaced.
- Plan panels that together cover 1.5–2× each opening.
- Measure from the top of the rod to the porch floor at both ends, and order about ½–1″ shorter.
Our curtain size calculator does the fullness maths for you.

Questions about porch curtains
Do porch curtains need to be outdoor fabric?
Yes. Even under a roof, a porch gets sun, damp air and blowing rain. Indoor fabric fades and mildews quickly; solution-dyed outdoor fabric doesn't.
How do you hang curtains on a porch?
Mount a rod or cable across the top of each opening, just under the beam or ceiling, and use tab top, back tab or rod pocket panels. Add tiebacks to the columns.
What colour porch curtains look best?
Whites and naturals look clean against most houses and keep the porch bright. Pick up a trim or shutter colour for something bolder, and order swatches to check them in your light.
Can I add privacy without losing light?
Sunbrella sheers blur the view from outside during the day while letting light through. For night privacy, use a lined solid.
