Amish Rocking Chair Cushions

Amish-made rocking chairs are often built from solid hardwood such as oak or cherry, with slat or spindle backs and a contoured seat. They are made to last for generations, but wood is firm on its own. A seat and back cushion set cut to the chair makes it comfortable for long evenings without hiding the woodwork.

Quick answer

Amish rocking chair cushions: the short answer

Fabrica Kraft makes custom seat and back cushions for Amish-made rocking chairs and gliders, cut from your measurements or a paper template. Sets come with ties in matching fabric so they stay on the chair, and every cover has a zipper.

Shape

How do I fit a cushion to a contoured hardwood seat?

Many hardwood rocker seats are wider at the front and notched at the back where the posts rise. The most reliable way to capture that shape is a paper template: lay paper on the seat, press it into the corners and trace the edge, including the notches. A thinner cushion, around 2″, follows a carved seat better than a thick one.

Measuring

Measuring an Amish rocker for cushions

Seat: width at the front and back, and depth from front edge to the back posts.
Back: height of the area you want covered and the width between the posts.
Ties: note where each tie will wrap a spindle, slat or post.
Thickness: decide how much padding you want; thinner shows more of the wood.

Our measuring guide walks through each step. For shaped seats, email care@fabricakraft.com before sending a template.

Indoor or porch

Indoor rocker or porch rocker?

For a rocker by the fireplace, velvet or a soft Warwick fabric over HD36-R foam feels warm and cozy. For a porch, choose Sunbrella with Dryfast foam so it handles damp air and the odd splash of rain. If your Amish piece is a glider rather than a rocker, our glider rocker replacement cushions page covers glider backs and ottomans.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you make cushions for a chair with a carved or saddle seat?

Yes. Trace the seat on paper and we will cut the cushion to that template. A thinner cushion usually follows the carving best.

How do the cushions stay on a spindle-back rocker?

We sew ties in matching fabric where you mark them, so they wrap the spindles or posts. Velcro is available on request.

Should I order a back cushion too?

It is up to you. Many people order the seat only to keep the back slats visible; a back cushion adds support for longer sits.

Can the back be softer than the seat?

Yes. Super Soft foam is available for back cushions only. Seats use Lux-R or HD36-R so they hold their shape.

What should I use on a porch rocker?

Sunbrella fabric with Dryfast foam, which drains and dries quickly outdoors.

How long does it take?

Standard shapes take 2–3 weeks. Shaped seats made from a template take 5–6 weeks.
