How thick should an outdoor cushion be?
- 2″–3″: dining chairs and benches, so you stay at table height.
- 3″–4″: lounge chairs, chaises and swings.
- 5″–6″: deep seating sofas and sectionals.
We cut foam up to 8″ in the builder; thicker sizes are quoted by email.
How to measure for a perfect fit
- Measure the frame or seat, not the old cushion, which shrinks and flattens with use.
- Measure width side to side and depth front to back, at the front and back, and use the smaller number.
- Round to the nearest ¼″ and note any tapering, rounded corners or notches for posts.
- For hinged chaise cushions, measure the seat and back sections separately.
Our measuring guide covers every shape with diagrams, and the cushion size and foam guide suggests a thickness and foam for your furniture.
Why standard sizes often don't fit
Off-the-shelf outdoor cushions come in a handful of sizes, but frames vary by brand, year and style. A cushion an inch too small slides around and gaps at the arms; an inch too big bulges and wears at the edges. Made-to-measure cushions avoid both. We cut every cushion within ±0.5″ of the size you order.
FAQ
What is the standard size of an outdoor chair cushion?
Most outdoor dining chair cushions are 18″ × 18″ to 20″ × 20″ and 2″ to 3″ thick. Lounge chair seats are larger, about 21″ to 24″ square and 3″ to 4″ thick.
What size is a standard chaise lounge cushion?
Usually 72″ to 80″ long, 22″ to 26″ wide and 3″ to 4″ thick.
What size are deep seat cushions?
Deep seat cushions are typically 24″ to 30″ deep and 5″ to 6″ thick, compared with about 20″ deep for standard seating.
Should a cushion be smaller than the chair frame?
Slightly. If it sits inside arms or a rim, take about ¼″ off each dimension so it drops in without bowing.
