Quick summary

"Commercial-grade" isn't a single certified standard. For cushions, it means four things: a cleanable, fade-resistant fabric, firm, dense foam that keeps its shape, removable covers with strong zippers, and fabric tested to the fire-safety standards your venue needs. For most restaurants, pool decks and hotels, that means Sunbrella or marine vinyl over CertiPUR-US Lux foam indoors, or Dryfast foam outdoors.

What makes a cushion commercial-grade

Part What to look for What we use
Fabric Holds color in sun, takes bleach or wipe-down cleaning, resists abrasion Sunbrella solution-dyed acrylic; Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl; Warwick PVC vegan leather; Gabriel contract fabrics; Ultraleather
Seat foam High density so it doesn't flatten under daily use CertiPUR-US Lux foam, 1.8 lb density, firm (50 lb ILD)
Outdoor foam Drains and dries fast so it doesn't stay wet Dryfast reticulated foam with antimicrobial treatment
Construction Removable covers, strong zippers, ties that hold in wind YKK zippers, zippers on the back or hinged side, matching fabric ties
Fire safety Test reports for your local code Sunbrella upholstery meets Cal TB 117-2013, NFPA 260 and UFAC Class I; reports attached to quotes

Waterproof vs water-repellent

This is the most common mix-up on rooftop and pool projects.

  • Water-repellent (most Sunbrella fabrics): water beads up and rolls off in light rain, but a soaking downpour or standing water will get through to the foam. The fabric itself dries fast and resists mildew.
  • Waterproof (Sunbrella Rain and Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl): water doesn't pass through the fabric. Marine vinyl wipes clean, which suits splash zones and swim-up bars.
  • The foam matters as much as the fabric. For cushions left outdoors, choose Dryfast foam. It lets water drain straight through and air-dries quickly, so cushions are usable again soon after rain.

For uncovered rooftops and pool decks, the reliable combination is Sunbrella over Dryfast foam. Use marine vinyl where cushions get wet constantly.

Choosing foam for hospitality seating

  • Seats: Lux foam, 3″–5″ thick for most chairs, banquettes and loungers. It's firm enough for all-day seating and typically lasts 5 to 8 years.
  • Backs: Super Soft foam is comfortable for back cushions, but it's for backs only, not seats.
  • Dacron wrap: adds about ¼″ and gives a fuller, rounded look. Leave it on the foam when you wash covers, since putting a wrapped insert back is much easier than re-wrapping loose batting.

See the cushion size and foam guide for thickness by furniture type.

Slipcovers and replacement covers

If your foam is still in good shape, you don't need new cushions. We make covers only to fit your existing foam, which is the quickest way to refresh a restaurant, food hall or amenity space after spills and wear. Measure the foam edge to edge, or send one cushion for us to copy. See how to order custom-shaped cushions for curved and unusual pieces.

Cleaning routine for busy venues

  1. Daily: brush off crumbs and debris; blot spills right away. Don't rub.
  2. Weekly: spot clean Sunbrella with ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water, then rinse. Wipe marine vinyl and vegan leather with mild soap and water.
  3. As needed: unzip Sunbrella covers and machine wash on a delicate cycle in cold water, then air dry. Don't put covers in a dryer.
  4. Mildew or tough stains on Sunbrella: 1 cup bleach and ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of water, soak 15 minutes, scrub gently, rinse well and air dry.
  5. Don't wash the foam. If foam gets wet, stand it on its edge to drain and dry fully before putting it back in the cover.

Vegan leather or genuine leather for benches?

For indoor banquettes and benches, vegan leather is the practical choice. Ours is Warwick's PVC-based leather-look upholstery: it wipes clean with soap and water, looks the same from piece to piece, and carries Warwick's 3-year warranty for home and commercial use. Ultraleather, a polyurethane leather-look fabric, is another wipe-clean option and meets Cal TB 117, NFPA 260, UFAC and ASTM E84 Class A. Genuine leather develops a patina and suits high-end interiors, but it needs professional cleaning. Ultraleather and Gabriel are made to order in 8–12 weeks, so plan them early.

Warranty

Workmanship (sewing, zippers, seams) is covered for 2 years and foam for 3 years. Fabric carries the mill's warranty: 5 years on Sunbrella upholstery fabrics, 10 years on Sunbrella marine fabrics, and 3 years on Warwick fabrics, including Warwick vegan leather. See warranty and fit guarantee.

FAQ

Are Sunbrella cushions waterproof?

Most Sunbrella fabrics are water-repellent, not waterproof. Sunbrella Rain and Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl are waterproof. For cushions left outside, pair the fabric with Dryfast foam so water drains through.

What is the best foam for outdoor restaurant cushions?

Dryfast reticulated foam. It drains water and dries quickly, so cushions are usable again soon after rain or cleaning.

Can I machine wash commercial cushion covers?

Sunbrella covers can be removed and machine washed on a delicate cycle in cold water, then air dried. Don't wash the foam.

Do you make replacement covers for existing cushions?

Yes. We make covers only to fit your existing foam. Measure the foam edge to edge, or send a cushion for us to copy.

What is your vegan leather made of, and what is the warranty?

Our vegan leather is Warwick's PVC-based leather-look upholstery. It wipes clean with mild soap and water and carries Warwick's 3-year warranty for home and commercial use, plus our 2-year workmanship and 3-year foam warranties.

Which fabric is best for restaurant booths?

Vegan leather, Ultraleather or marine vinyl for wipe-clean surfaces, or Sunbrella for a woven look that can be bleach-cleaned. All hold up to daily commercial use.
