Description
Quick answer Wedge bolster cushions made to your exact length, height and top and bottom thickness, with a flat back and a sloped front. For daybed and swing bed backs, window seats, chaise headrests, sofa arms, lumbar support and leg rests. Sunbrella for outdoors, Warwick for indoors. Cut within 6 mm (maximum ±25 mm) and ships in 2–3 weeks.

A wedge bolster gives angled support where a round bolster would roll away. It has a flat back that rests against the wall or frame, a flat base and a narrower top, so the front slopes back at a comfortable angle. We make each one to your four measurements, in Sunbrella for outdoors or Warwick for indoors, with a zippered cover.

Where to use a wedge bolster

  • Daybeds and swing beds: a long wedge along the back turns a mattress into a sofa you can sit up on.
  • Window seats and banquettes: back support where there is no backrest, without hiding the window.
  • Chaise lounges: a short wedge as a headrest or neck support.
  • Sofa and sectional arms: a firmer, flat-sided arm bolster that stays put.
  • Lumbar support: a small wedge behind the lower back on a bench or lounge chair.
  • Leg rests: a deep, low wedge to raise your legs on a lounger or bed.

How to measure

  1. Length: end to end along the furniture.
  2. Height: from the bottom of the wedge to the top of the back. For a back cushion, measure from the top of the seat cushion, not the frame, or it will sit too tall.
  3. Top thickness: front to back at the top.
  4. Bottom thickness: front to back at the base, where it sits on the seat. This is the same as the top thickness or more.

Round to the nearest ¼″. Either the height or the bottom thickness can be up to 12″; the other can go up to 30″ high or 24″ thick. Replacing an old wedge? Measure the foam, or the cover seam to seam, not the bulge. Not sure? Send us a photo and your measurements before you order and we'll check them.

What you choose

  • Length, height, top thickness and bottom thickness
  • Fabric: any Sunbrella (outdoor) or Warwick (indoor) colour
  • Foam and Dacron wrap, or cover only
  • Piping and ties

Fabric and foam

  • Outdoors: Sunbrella, solution-dyed acrylic that resists fading, mildew and stains.
  • Indoors: Warwick upholstery fabrics, velvet and more.
  • Dryfast foam for anything that lives outside: open-cell, so rain drains straight through.
  • High Density (HD36-R) foam for indoor wedges: a medium feel that holds its angle.
  • Luxury (Lux-R) foam if you want a firmer back rest.

The foam is cut to the wedge shape from solid foam and wrapped in Dacron so the cover fills out crisply. Every cover has a zipper, so you can take it off to clean it.

Questions about wedge bolsters

What is the difference between a wedge bolster and a round bolster?

A round bolster is a roll with round ends. A wedge bolster has a flat base and a sloped face, so it sits still and supports your back at an angle. Use a wedge for back rests and leg rests, and a round bolster for sofa arms and neck rolls.

What size wedge do I need for a daybed?

For a twin daybed back, a good starting point is the length of the mattress (about 75″), 18–20″ high, 10″ thick at the bottom and 3–4″ at the top. Measure your own frame: the length should match the mattress, and the height is measured from the top of the mattress to just below the top of the backrest.

Can a wedge bolster go outside?

Yes. Choose Sunbrella fabric and Dryfast foam. Warwick fabrics are for indoor use.

Can I order matching wedges for a set?

Yes. Build one, add it to the cart, then change the size for the next one. They will match in fabric and foam.

Can you copy my old wedge cushion?

Yes. Measure the old foam or cover and enter those sizes. If it has an unusual shape, tell us in the notes box or email us a photo before you order.

What if it doesn't fit?

We cut most cushions to within 6 mm of your measurements, and our maximum tolerance is ±25 mm on length and width (±38 mm for 0.55 m² or more) and ±13 mm on thickness. If it arrives outside that, we remake it free.

Fit guarantee: we cut most cushions to within 6 mm of the measurements you send. Our maximum manufacturing tolerance is ±25 mm on length and width (±38 mm for cushions of 0.55 m² or more) and ±13 mm on thickness. If yours arrives outside that tolerance, we remake it free. See our warranty and fit guarantee.

How to measure

Seat cushions

Measure the seat side to side and front to back, between arms if there are any. Round up to the nearest ¼″. For a tapered seat, measure the front and back widths.

Back cushions

Measure from the seat to where you want the cushion to stop. Width is usually the same as the seat.

Chaise and Adirondack

Measure the full length laid flat, then the back section from the top to the hinge point where the back rest bends.

Covers only

Measure your foam, not the old cover. We cut the cover to fit snugly.

Scatter cushions

Order the cover the size of your insert. Our micro-fibre inserts are sized to fill the cover.

Curtains

Panel width: add the panels up to 1½–2× the opening. Length: from the rod (or top of the tab) to where the hem should land.

Odd shape? Tick “unique shape” and send a paper template after you order. Questions: operation@fabricakraft.com.
