Outdoor Cushions
Restaurant Patio Cushions That Survive Service
How to specify outdoor dining cushions for a restaurant patio that handle sun, rain, spills and busy turnover.
On this page
Quick answer: Restaurant patio cushions survive service when they combine solution-dyed outdoor fabric such as Sunbrella, quick-drain Dryfast foam and secure ties. Add a simple storage routine and a few spare covers, and your outdoor dining seats stay clean, dry and ready for the next seating.
The patio is often the busiest and most visible part of a restaurant in good weather. It also faces sun, rain, spilled drinks, pollen and the occasional gust that sends a cushion across the deck. Cushions built for a backyard rarely last a season of commercial use. This guide is for owners, managers and designers who want restaurant outdoor furniture that looks good and keeps working. Our commercial outdoor cushions are made to measure for chairs, benches and loungers, with no minimum order.
What outdoor dining cushions have to handle
- Sun: hours of direct UV that fades ordinary dyed fabric.
- Rain and sprinklers: water soaking into the foam, then staying there.
- Food and drink: sauces, wine and oily spills, often in a rush.
- Wind: loose cushions sliding off or blowing away.
- Turnover: many seatings a day and quick resets between them.
Each of these points leads to a material choice. Get them right at the start and the cushions will look the same in late summer as they did on opening day.
Choose fabric for sun, spills and rain
Sunbrella is the common choice for commercial patios. It is solution-dyed, so the colour runs through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. That makes it fade and mould resistant. Most Sunbrella is water-repellent, not waterproof: light rain beads off, but steady rain will eventually soak through. If your patio has no cover, consider the Sunbrella waterproof range, or Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl, which wipes clean and does not absorb water.
The difference matters for planning. Read waterproof vs water-repellent fabrics for a clear breakdown, or browse our Sunbrella waterproof collection.
Dryfast foam for outdoor seating
Foam is where most patio cushions fail. Standard foam acts like a sponge, holds water for days and can develop mildew. Dryfast is an open-cell, quick-drain outdoor foam. Water runs straight through it, so cushions dry quickly after rain or a hose-down. It carries a 5-year warranty.
- Dining chairs: 2 inch seat pads are standard and keep seat height close to the table.
- Benches: 2 to 3 inches, depending on how long guests sit.
- Loungers and daybeds: 3 to 4 inches for comfort in lounge areas.
Our US foam is CertiPUR-US certified, from The Foam Factory, and made without added flame-retardant chemicals.
Measuring a whole patio
Commercial patios usually mix several seat types. Start with a simple count and a sketch of the layout, then measure.
- Chairs: measure one chair of each model, width at front and back, and depth. Note any rounded corners or post cut-outs.
- Built-in benches: measure every bench on its own. Site-built benches often vary by an inch or more along a run.
- Loungers and daybeds: measure the frame, and note whether the back section hinges.
Send photos with a tape measure in shot. It helps us spot details that are easy to miss on a list.
Ties and fastening
A cushion that slides off a chair is a trip hazard and a nuisance for servers. Ties in matching fabric are standard on our cushions, and Velcro is available on request. We do not offer non-slip backing. For dining chairs, ties at the back corners hold the pad in place while still allowing quick removal at close. On benches, ask for ties at intervals that match the bench supports.
Storage and end-of-day routine
Even the best outdoor cushions last longer when they are not left out in every storm. Build a simple routine:
- At close, wipe down vinyl and brush off crumbs from woven covers.
- Stand cushions on edge or store them in a dry, ventilated bin or closet.
- If rain is forecast overnight, bring them in.
- After heavy rain, stand Dryfast cushions on edge so they drain fully before service.
- At the end of the season, wash covers, let everything dry completely and store indoors.
Sunbrella covers are machine washable. For a step-by-step method, see how to clean Sunbrella cushions.
Quick-turn sets and spares
A spilled glass of red wine should not take a table out of service. Plan for it.
- Spare covers: order a few extra covers for each seat type in the same fabric batch. Swap one in, wash the stained one later.
- Spare cushions: keep a few complete cushions for the most common chair size.
- Standard sizes: where possible, use one cushion size for all chairs of the same model so any cushion fits any chair.
- Labeling: label bench and lounger cushions by position so they go back in the right place.
Because covers are zipped and removable, you can also reorder covers alone in later seasons and keep using sound foam.
Fire safety on patios
Patios with heaters, fire pits or tabletop flames deserve extra thought. Check with your fire marshal or insurer what they require for outdoor seating. Sunbrella upholstery fabrics are tested to Cal TB 117-2013, NFPA 260 and UFAC Class I, confirmed per pattern, and we supply the maker's test reports on request. We do not certify finished installations. See our fire safety and flammability standards page.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using indoor foam outdoors. It holds water and grows mildew.
- Assuming all outdoor fabric is waterproof.
- Skipping ties on dining chairs in a windy spot.
- Ordering exactly one cushion per seat with no spares.
- Leaving cushions out in storms all season.
- Choosing very light colours in a high-spill area.
How a commercial order works
- Count seats by type: dining chairs, benches, loungers. Measure one of each model, and every bench individually.
- Send sizes and photos to operation@fabricakraft.com or through our bulk cushion enquiry form.
- Order swatches to check colour in daylight. Swatches are $7 each, credited back on your order.
- Approve the spec sheet and drawing before cutting.
- Production takes 2 to 3 weeks for standard shapes. Plan around your patio opening date, and ask about rush production and express shipping if you are close.
Every cushion is made within ±13 mm of the ordered size, or we remake it free. Designers and hospitality groups can join our trade program. To get a quote, start with our commercial outdoor cushions page.
Frequently asked questions
Are Sunbrella cushions waterproof?
Most Sunbrella fabric is water-repellent, not waterproof. The Sunbrella waterproof range and marine collections are waterproof. Pair either with Dryfast foam so water drains quickly.
Do patio cushions need to come in every night?
Not always, but bringing them in or storing them dry when rain is forecast helps them last much longer.
How many spare covers should a restaurant keep?
Keep a few spares for each seat type, with more for the sizes used most. Order them with the main batch so colours match.
Can you match cushions to our existing patio chairs?
Yes. Send the seat measurements and photos, and we make cushions to fit within ±13 mm.
How long do outdoor restaurant cushions take to make?
Standard shapes take 2 to 3 weeks and custom shapes 5 to 6 weeks. Rush options are available at extra cost.
