Trusted to perform. Designed to endure.
Sunbrella is the performance fabric made by Glen Raven, a family-owned textile company in North Carolina, since 1961. Here’s how it works, how to care for it, and how we turn it into cushions made to your exact size.

Proven performance from fiber to fabric
Since 1961, Sunbrella quality has been built in at the fiber level for deep-down performance that doesn’t rely on a finish. Thanks to Color to the Core™ technology, every fabric is designed to be weather- and fade-resistant and come clean from tough stains, without sacrificing comfort.

Weather resistant
Sunbrella fabrics are designed to withstand Mother Nature, resisting mold, mildew and the harmful effects of exposure to sun, rain, snow and humidity.

Fade resistant
Unlike ordinary fabrics with dyes added to the surface, Sunbrella fibers are dyed with UV-stabilized pigments, so the color stays brilliant over time, no matter the environment.

Long lasting
Sunbrella fabrics are woven with strong, colorfast fibers to provide enduring quality for years.

Comfortable
Sunbrella fabrics are designed with inviting softness that turns spaces into sanctuaries, without sacrificing the performance that withstands life outdoors.

Tough stains come clean
Sunbrella fabrics are shown to come clean from tough stains, with deep-down strength that can even stand up to bleach—and doesn’t rely on a finish.

Color to the Core™
All Sunbrella fabrics are manufactured with Color to the Core™ technology. Each Sunbrella fiber is saturated with dye throughout, instead of just on the surface, before it’s spun into yarn.
Think of a carrot: orange all the way through, not painted orange. That’s why Sunbrella holds its color in strong sun and can be cleaned with diluted bleach without losing it.
Water-repellent, waterproof or marine?
Three kinds of Sunbrella, three different jobs. Pick the one that matches where your cushions live.
Sunbrella upholstery
Canvas, Spectrum, Cast and most of our range. Rain beads off, but water can get in through the seams in a downpour. Pair it with Dry Fast foam so the inside drains and dries quickly.
Sunbrella Rain
Waterproof upholstery fabric, made for cushions that stay out in wet weather for long periods.
Sunbrella Horizon
A marine-grade vinyl, not acrylic. Fully waterproof and used for boat cushions and poolside seating.

How to clean Sunbrella outdoor cushions
Life can deliver the unexpected. Most spills clean up quickly with mild soap and water, so you can get back to living comfortably and worry-free. The quicker you clean a spill, the easier it is to remove.
Try this first with a new spill
Blot (don’t rub) with a clean, dry cloth. For oily spills, apply corn starch and lift it off with a straight edge.
Spray with a mild soap-and-water solution, or Sunbrella Clean™ Multi-Purpose Fabric Cleaner.
Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue, then let it air dry.
Removable covers
- Hand wash: soak in ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water. Lightly agitate with a sponge or very soft brush, rinse thoroughly and air dry.
- Machine wash: close all zippers and wash cold on a delicate cycle with mild detergent. For severe mold or mildew, add 1 cup of bleach. Air dry.
- Every Fabrica Kraft cover has a zipper, so it comes off for washing.
Covers that stay on
- Mix ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water. Use a soft-bristled brush and let the solution soak in, then rinse thoroughly and air dry.
- Clean the whole surface from seam to seam to avoid water rings. An extractor helps with residue.
Mold and mildew
Sunbrella doesn’t promote mildew, but mildew can grow on dirt left on the fabric.
- Mix 1 cup of bleach and ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of water.
- Spray the entire area and let it soak in for 15 minutes.
- Clean with a sponge, towel or very soft brush, rinse thoroughly and air dry. For severe cases, increase the bleach.
Oil-based stains
If an oily stain remains after cleaning, use Sunbrella Extract™ Oil-Based Stain Remover or a strong degreaser, then rinse thoroughly.
Helpful hints
- Clean spills promptly; full removal isn’t guaranteed for spills left to set.
- Avoid scrubbing, hard brushes and abrasive cleaners.
- Always let Sunbrella air dry.
- Protect nearby non-Sunbrella fabrics from bleach, and follow the precautions on the bleach label.
- To remove wrinkles, use an iron on the synthetic setting (test a hidden spot). No steam.
- After many cleanings, refresh water repellency with Sunbrella Restore™ Fabric Protector & Repellent on clean, dry fabric, outdoors.
- Using a professional cleaner? Ask about their experience with Sunbrella and retreatment.

Questions about Sunbrella fabric
What is Sunbrella fabric made of?
Most Sunbrella upholstery fabric is 100% solution-dyed acrylic. Some ranges blend in other fibers, and Sunbrella Horizon is a marine vinyl.
Is Sunbrella waterproof?
Standard Sunbrella upholstery is water-repellent, not waterproof. Sunbrella Rain upholstery and Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl are waterproof.
Does Sunbrella fade?
Sunbrella is made to resist fading because the color runs through the fiber. Like any fabric, it changes slowly over many years of direct sun, but far less than printed or piece-dyed fabrics.
Can Sunbrella cushions stay outside in the rain?
Yes. The fabric resists mold and mildew. To help cushions last longer, stand them on edge after heavy rain and store them during long wet or winter spells.
Can you use bleach on Sunbrella?
Yes. A diluted mix of bleach, mild soap and water is safe on solution-dyed Sunbrella acrylic. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
Is Sunbrella good for indoor furniture?
Yes. It’s soft enough for sofas and window seats and a good choice for sunny rooms and homes with kids or pets. See also Sunbrella Interiors.
