Boat and Yacht Cushions Built for Sun, Salt and Spray
On this page
Every Boxing Day, the fleet leaves Sydney Harbour for Hobart with a flotilla of spectator boats bobbing alongside. This year it falls on Saturday 26 December. Half of Sydney seems to be out on the water with an Esky, a few friends and a plan to wave the racers off before heading for a swim somewhere sheltered.
It's a good reminder that boating is very much the norm here. If you've ever sat on a hot aft deck on a December afternoon and felt the vinyl through your shorts you'll know why the cushions are such an important part of the experience.
How to Choose Boat Cushions?
On exposed decks, pick marine-grade vinyl or marine acrylic made for UV, salt and spray. Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl looks like leather but is built for the job, and Sunbrella's boat cushions carry a 10-year fabric warranty. Use fast-draining foam so water passes straight through. Choose lighter colours where the sun hits all day. And for curved or angled seating, make a template so the cushion fits the boat properly.
Why Do Boat Cushions Fail So Quickly?
Boat cushions fail quickly because boats are one of the hardest environments for upholstery. The sun reflects off the water, so UV hits from above and below. Salt crystallises on the surface and slowly eats into coatings. Humid nights in northern waters leave everything damp until the next morning.
Here is what we hear about most often from owners:
-
Cracking vinyl: Cheap vinyl loses its flexibility in UV and splits at the seams and creases.
-
Stiff, chalky surfaces: Salt and sun strip the protective finish, leaving a rough, dull top.
-
Black mould in the corners: Slow-drying foam in humid weather grows mould in weeks.
-
Stitching that gives way: Ordinary thread breaks down under UV before the fabric does.
-
Sagging seats: Low-grade foam flattens and the seat becomes a board.
Most of this is down to choosing materials meant for a lounge room and putting them on a boat.
Which Fabric Is Best for Boat Cushions on an Open Deck?

For boat cushions on cockpits, flybridges and bow seating, marine vinyl is the standard choice. Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl is designed for sun, salt and spray, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth. It also gives you the look of leather without the cracking problems that come with the real thing in a marine environment.
For sun pads and softer seating a marine-grade woven acrylic is definitely worth looking at. It's a lot cooler against the skin, dries very quickly after you've been in the water and is just more comfortable to sit on for a long afternoon. A lot of people will mix the two, using the vinyl in the areas that are going to be the most abused and the woven in the areas where comfort is the key.
How Do You Stop Boat Cushions Getting Too Hot to Sit On?
Colour decides how hot boat cushions get, and it matters more than most boaties expect. Dark vinyl in full sun can reach temperatures that burn bare legs. Cream, sand and light grey reflect far more heat, and they look sharp against white fibreglass and timber trim. If you prefer a darker look, save it for areas under a bimini or hardtop where the cushions get shade. Our Sunbrella cushions come in a wide spread of marine-friendly colours if you want to compare.
What Makes Foam Different in Boat Cushions?
Foam in boat cushions behaves differently from foam on land. On land, foam fails slowly. On a boat, it can fail in a season. Spray, rain, wet swimmers and humid nights all push water into the core, and ordinary foam holds it there.
Fast-draining, open-cell foam lets water pass straight through, so the cushion dries quickly once the sun comes out. Our Outdoor Dry Fast Foam is built for that exact job. If your existing covers are sound but the foam has gone sour or flat, replacing just the inserts can buy you another season while you plan a full refit.

Which Cushions Suit Tinnies and Smaller Boats?

Tinnies and smaller boats need good cushions too, since not every boat has a flybridge. Plenty of the boats on the register are small runabouts, centre consoles and the classic tinnie, and the seating on them is often a bench, a pedestal seat or a bit of foam someone cut years ago.
Small boats are actually harder on cushions in some ways. They get wetter, because there's less freeboard and more spray. They're often stored outside, on a trailer or in a driveway, where the sun hits them daily. And they get used hard, with fishing gear, eskies and wet dogs all competing for space.
The good news is that smaller seats are simple to get right. A firm, quick-draining foam with a marine vinyl cover handles most of what a day of fishing can throw at it, and custom made cushions mean the seat fits your boat rather than the other way round. A non-slip base keeps the cushion in place when the boat hits a wave. And a light colour keeps the seat from becoming an oven by lunchtime.
How Do You Clean Fish, Bait and Sunscreen Off Boat Cushions?
Fish, bait and sunscreen leave their own marks on boat cushions. Bait oils, fish blood and sunscreen all stain and soften vinyl if left on, so wipe them off the same day with mild soap and fresh water. Avoid strong solvents, which damage the protective finish. If a stain has set, it's worth testing a gentle cleaner on a hidden corner first.
A rinse and a wipe at the end of every trip takes five minutes. Skip it for a few months and you'll feel it in the cushions.
Can Boat Cushions Be Made to Fit Curved Seating?
Boat cushions can be made to fit curved seating, and it's one of the most common things we're asked. Most boats are full of curves. A wraparound settee, a bow seat that follows the hull, a corner that narrows where the cabin meets the cockpit. A standard rectangular cushion will never sit properly in any of them.
The way around it is a template. Trace the shape on paper, mark the top side and any fittings like cup holders or hatches, and send it to us. Template shapes usually take five to six weeks, so it pays to plan ahead.
How Do You Clean Boat Cushions After a Day Out?
Salt is the main enemy of boat cushions, and it's easiest to deal with the same day.
-
Rinse the cushions with fresh water to wash away salt before it dries.
-
Wipe with a soft cloth and a little mild soap, working across the surface.
-
Avoid products with alcohol or ammonia, which strip the protective finish.
-
Stand cushions on their edge so air gets underneath.
-
Keep sunscreen off light vinyl where possible, because some formulas leave yellow marks.
A regular wipe-down is far easier than a big scrub at the end of summer. Our guide on how to clean and maintain marine cushions goes through the process step by step.
Should Salon and Deck Cushions Match on a Boat?
Salon and deck cushions on a boat don't need to be identical, but they should feel like they belong together. Most designers suggest picking one colour family and using it through the cabin, cockpit and flybridge. Then you vary the texture to suit each space.
For example, a warm cream leather-look vinyl in the salon pairs well with a sand-coloured marine fabric on the aft deck. Navy piping repeats across both, and you've got a boat that looks planned rather than patched together. If your salon has a settee or dinette bench running under the cabin windows, our window seat cushions are made for exactly that kind of seat, with a firm base and a fit that follows the shape. Throw cushions are the easiest place to add personality, because they can be swapped each season.
How Do You Look After Boat Cushions Over the Off-Season?

Boat cushions need looking after in the off-season, because even in warmer waters there's usually a quieter patch. Before you put the boat away, give every cushion a thorough clean and let it dry fully in the sun. Check the seams and zips while you're there.
Store them upright, off the floor, somewhere dry and ventilated. If the foam has gone flat over the summer, a new set of inserts from our custom foam collection is a cheaper fix than a full refit. Cotton or mesh bags work better than plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mould. If cushions have to stay aboard, prop them on their edges and consider a small dehumidifier in the cabin.
In tropical and subtropical areas, where humidity doesn't take a holiday, it's worth checking on them every few weeks. A small damp patch in March is a much bigger problem by June.
When Should You Order New Boat Cushions?
Order new boat cushions earlier than you'd think. Standard Sunbrella cushions usually take two to three weeks, but made-to-template shapes take five to six, and anything in Ultraleather is made to order and can take eight to twelve weeks. If you want the boat ready for Boxing Day, working back from the date will tell you how soon you need to start.
If you're not sure what's right for your boat, our ultimate guide to Sunbrella marine cushions covers the options in detail, and the right choice will depend on how you use the boat.
Which Boat Cushions Should You Replace First?
Replace first any boat cushion that gets direct sun for most of the day first, because it fades first. After that, tackle the seat the family uses most. If any cushion has started to smell musty, move it to the top of the list, since the foam is probably waterlogged.
Courtney Rosen ordered custom Sunbrella covers for two outdoor couches and an ottoman. Her furniture has hexagonal sections that are sewn together and held with Velcro, which makes it hard to match. Here’s what she said:
“Honestly, I never thought I’d be able to find anyone who could duplicate them. They did a spectacular job and delivered two weeks earlier than expected. I can finally use my outside furniture again.”

If the bow sun pad is the cushion that fades first on your boat, the Sunbrella Horizon Capriccio Ivory Boat Cushion is a good choice. It stays cooler in full sun than darker vinyl, and it looks right next to white fibreglass.
